For both conditions, clicks were distributed around target center throughout the trial, rather than bimodally to either side. So we think it's more likely a max-intensity rather than max-slope strategy, though we know that echo spatial acuity is slightly better off-axis in humans as well.
3d plot with histograms along an angular error X axis, Click index quartile on the Y axis, and normalized proportion on the Z axis. All histograms are unimodally focused about zero error.

We focus on an expert performing a simple task: given a target in the frontal hemifield, find it using echolocation and localize it by head-pointing. We video tracked the observer's head motion from a stationary seated position. Convergence was steady for Big Targets and moderate for Small Targets.
A plot titled "Big Target" with Y axis "Relative head azimuth, degrees" and X axis "Trial time before response, seconds." 103 time courses overlaid show a steady progressive reduction of relative azimuth over time.A plot titled "Small Target" with Y axis "Relative head azimuth, degrees" and X axis "Trial time before response, seconds." 50 time courses overlaid show a minor reduction of relative azimuth over time.

There is precedent for claiming your first authorship without taking it away from your late colleague. For example www.frontiersin.org/journals/imm...
Author contribution snippet reading, "The co-first authorship order was determined via the best of three rounds in Super Smas Bros. Both YB and BZ contributed equally and have the right to list their name first in their CV."

Knowing things is good. #standupforscience2025
Collage of 5 images from Stand Up for Science protest in San Francisco. Middle image is a wide shot of crowd holding signs against backdrop of bright clear sky and the S.F. City Hall building. Surrounding four images depict protest signs:
- A trans flag and the chemistry pun, "Science is for Alkynes."
- A handwritten sign reading "Knowing Things Is Good."
- Another handwritten sign reading "I'm Not A Mad Scientist; I'm a Scientist Who's Really Mad."
- A stenciled sign reading "Got the Plague? Me Either. Thank You Science."

Talking optimal signal properties for assisted #echolocation at UCBerkeley Vision Science's #BAVRD conference, where our lab was among the @skeriresearch.bsky.social contingent. TLDR: in biomimetic sonar as in life, slowing down clears things up 🔊, in this case for object echo discrimination!

Epilogue: the reviews come back
Video frame of Fiona Shaw's character from True Detective: Night Country, Rose Agineau, reclining wistfully in her chair with a cigarette. Subtitles display her dialogue: "Every damned word I'd written in my entire life was meaningless."

Had a great time speaking to CS grad seminar students at SF State yesterday! Thanks to Ilmi Yoon for the invite, and everyone for your patience, engagement, and interest. cs.sfsu.edu/event/gradua...
Minimalist title slide for a talk titled "Computational approaches to understanding perception and the brain," by Santani Teng from Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, for the SFSU Computer Science Graduate Seminar on Nov. 15, 2023. The black text is on a plain white background except for two horizontal lines near the top and bottom, and a light gray background diagram of a human brain on the right half of the image.
