I see a lot about policies to get more from #NorthSea #oil&gas and wondered what the government actually gets, as I thought it was all privately owned. So while an unsolicited AI summary tells me there is a lot of revenue to be had, the IFS presents this from HMRC data. ifs.org.uk/taxlab/taxla...
Graph from 1968-2025 showing revenue from North Sea gas and oil as a share of GDP over time. Except for a peak in the 1983 giving 3% the income has been equal or below 0.5%

I don’t post often, but my 6 year old son just asked me to explain a research poster I was preparing and listened with genuine interest and relevant questions 🥹

Yesterday @anajsobrido.bsky.social and I hosted the UK Flow Battery Network symposium on at the Octagon in Queen Mary University London. Brilliant crowd of excellent researchers. I’m excited for what is next as #LongDurationEnergyStorage and alternative #BatteryEnergyStorageSystems take hold!

Thought the storm and strikes would stop my travel down, but here I am! Heading to London to host the UK Flow Battery Network Symposium on Monday. That’s train wine, not a new flow battery electrolyte. #ldes #flowbatteries #energystroage #chemsky #electrochemsky

On a train travelling all the way to Bath today. Very honoured to be giving the Guest Lecture for the annual Electrochemistry Winter School, tomorrow. Some thoughts 1. Beautiful day to see the UK; 2. Trains running remarkably smoothly (so far); 3. My favourite element is iron. #chemsky

Congratulations to Sam for passing his PhD viva today! Fabricating as-bought Mxene electrodes for electrocatalysis. Thanks to our wonderful examiners @anajsobrido.bsky.social and @jghardylab.bsky.social.

My sabbatical year is coming to an end soon, and I feel I have literally used it to tread water. I started it with an 8 month old and 4 year old. I’m fortunate to have grant funding which I was trying to get the most out of. But this year has not gone as I hoped.

Was great to have the #DualFlow #ERC consortium for #greenhydrogen at #Lancaster this time. What a super productive meeting!
