Our Hero Enters a Den of Iniquity
A silhouetted figure with a jack-o-lantern head walks down an alley to a arched doorway with two gate doors. The doors are openwork, metal bars, and they are partially open. The light from the doorway is practically the only lighting in the scene, and the bars of the gate doors cast long shadows on the ground. Above the doorway is a neon sign, an almost abstract figure of a nude woman with an arm raised behind her head.

Carmilla, with and without the tonemapping/desaturation I'm using in this story (the image on the right is her normal coloring!) The bat dress is a one-shot for this scene (that is NOT its usual fabric) so I wanted to do a quick memorial render. (no alt text, that's literally all there is to know)

I have enjoyed every single render I've done of Carmilla Velazquez so far in this story.
Carmilla talking to Jack earnestly in his office, looking up at him over her shoulder (Jack's more than a foot taller than she is). Spoiler: Carmilla is a vampire. It's not much of a spoiler.

She has bats stitched onto her dress.

As a consolation prize for that essay link, here's a story render from a couple of days ago. I'm not all that far behind on renders but omg I am being horrible about writing dialogue. I just haven't had the brain for it at the right times.
Our hero, a private investigator with a jack-o-lantern for a head, walks either pensively or morosely (with him it's hard to tell) down one of the many forlorn alleys of the naked city. The taxi that's brought him there (an old-fashioned Checker) is driving away behind him.

The rule of the office window this summer has been that on the rare occasions a nice cool breeze has been coming in it, it's also raining and the breeze is bringing water in. The aloe doesn't mind, but the yellow shelf is getting a bit damp.
A large aloe plant looking out the open office window at a stunning view of not much. It is overcast and drizzling outside.

The aloe needs some of its dead leaves (or whatever they're called in a succulent -- bracts or some such) trimmed. I keep forgetting to do that.

First render of the Hallowe'en story's in the can and it's pretty damned good. That means it'll only get worse from here. (The composition's off on purpose; that big black area of wall at upper right is going to be needed to hold caption text.)
A private detective sits in his office, leaning back in his chair with his feet on the desk. He has a lit jack-o-lantern for a head.

The majority of the light in the scene is what's managing to seep in through the Venetian blinds. The colors are desaturated and tinted slightly orange-brown.

Last character design of the night. This story requires fourteen character designs of significance (that is, requiring more than a minute or two of tinkering), and I THINK this is the last one. I hope.
Polly is what, sadly, is referred to in online-perversion circles as a "goo girl." She is pink and purple and semi-transparent and drippy. She also doesn't look thrilled to be appearing in this image.

Ah, Roxie was 8 MB because of her fucking HAIR. I have deleted hair before for that kind of bloat. The thing is, I wasn't happy with it in the first place. I've changed to hair I like better and now her save is 225 KB, which is where it should have been. (Read alt text re her dress)
Roxie is a young woman with long orange-auburn hair, thrown back over her shoulders, and vivid green eyes. She is wearing a black ribbon choker with a mysterious glyph pendant, and a black satin dress with metallic orange trim, which has a V neckline cut so low that (since it is also off both shoulders) it is mathematically impossible for it to stay put in that position. Since Roxie is a witch, we must assume the use of magic, or, failing that, strategic adhesives.

This is Buttons, btw. I post a test render of her here just because every so often I am required to give someayall freaky-ass dreams. She is a V4 figure/surface (an antique), but the yarn hair is G8 and the button eyes are G9. It's a wonder she doesn't explode.
Buttons is apparently a living patchwork doll. She has yarn hair and black button eyes. She is staring directly at you (the camera) disconcertingly. Actually, she kind of isn't because of the way her eyes are sewn on; they can't quite both look in the same direction at the same time. (Which is even more disconcerting.)

I still haven't figured out "librariancore" but I DID decide that one of those outfits was perfect for the character I was just then designing, so, INSTANT VALUE
A big woman wearing a long brown skirt with a belt, a white blouse with an old-fashioned-looking collar, and a burnt orange cardigan, buttoned. Her head is a jack-o-lantern with a candle flame visible inside it. Her hand (the only part of her skin visible - she has no neck, and her clothes cover everything else) is decayed-looking, with extremely long thin fingers and long pointed yellowed fingernails.

Sometimes single-source lighting is your friend. (I can safely post this image without spoilers because the people who read Sleeper Squad will have absolutely no context for who or what this woman is)
A woman looking down at something off-camera with an expression of surprise or concern. The camera angle is looking sharply up at her face from ground level, as is the sole light source. The light is orange and illuminates her against a backdrop of a starry night sky.

Good panel. (Will almost surely be cropped on the page, so you may be the only people to see it in original ratio)
Firefly, who wears a moth-like costume, is in midair firing bolts from her hands at some sort of humanoid on the ground, whose shape we can't really make out because they are enclosed in some kind of lightning force field.

Because it is a running thing that heroes and villains in Century get visible title cards (yes, that the other characters in the scene can see and remark upon -- no one's sure how it works), there's text on the wall, superimposed on an existing sign or poster of a cityscape already in the scene: THE FIREFLY SEES ALL

I needed you all to see this ABSOLUTELY FUCKING BEAUTIFUL first panel of the Sleeper Squad I just started work on (especially since this is a 3x1 wide and the ends will get cropped off, diminishing its broad expanse considerably) Click in and turn your phone sideways!
A wide expanse of desert, with mountains visible in the distance. Pale red sand and the twisted wood of dead trees. At left, Chelle is walking towards us, but she's still far away, just a small silhouette. Playing my way through all the DLC for Escape Simulator and I hit the Portal-themed level, which was great ... but I hadn't realized until then just how much Portal taught us a symbolic vernacular. If you played Portal, what you have to do here is easy. If you didn't, it's incomprehensible.
Screenshot of a clipboard with eight diagrams on it. What you have to do is mark whether each of these rooms would be completable in Portal (that is, if you can get to the exit and open it). But to do that, you must know what each of the shorthand symbols in the diagram MEANS in Portal. They are not explained in Escape Simulator.

If it was gradually pulling loose from the slot that'd explain the erratic. SO ... Hack of the day: Artisanal, locally-grown, card support beam. Hasn't done anything foolish in an hour of use since then.
The dangling corner of a video card is supported by a section of square dowel with a plastic cap on its lower end and a rubber washer wedged in at the top end. One more thing about this scene: Claire and her backdrop have a pink spotlight, and unusually for Coldpoint, are in full color for two panels. When her pitch fails, we return to normal Coldpoint settings: Half desaturated and tinted slightly blue at all times. This helps convey her reaction.
Claire Parsons watches the two women she was trying to pitch walk away. Her back is to the camera, but even so we can tell she is dejected by her failure.

That propaganda art, BTW, was a completely separate composition which took thirty minutes, most of which was spent finding a font which looked sufficiently like it was from the first-menstruation pamphlet they gave all the girls in junior high. I go the distance. This view of it is just for you.
The backdrop art in question has a young man and woman in jumpsuits running hand-in-hand blissfully through a field of flowers, with text that reads "Human Futures"

I think about these panels a lot while I'm poking around DeviantArt
Woman who has just been involuntarily transformed by dude in laundromat: "You know, I'm strangely attracted to you. But I'm going to walk out of here right now unless you tell me the truth. I bet you don't want that, do you?"
Dude, referring to the transformation gadget in his hand: "It's ... uh ... it's supposed to turn you into ... my dream woman. I didn't think it would work!
[more quietly] " ... and I didn't know you'd notice ..."
Her, checking her reflection in a dryer door: "So you bumped up my tits and ass, gave me an eyebrow wax and a full face of makeup, and let my hair down.
"Don't know whether to be flattered I was already pretty close, or concerned about your lack of imagination."

Since we apparently don't have Fay Hu here in the real world, I guess we'll need to destroy these people through the legal system somehow.
Panel from "Sweet Eliza," found wherever my fine comics are found. Fay Hu has been asked whether she had to go into hiding because of Spence Tervid's retribution for her leaking details which destroyed his company Teragon.

Fay explains: "Tervid couldn't find retribution with a telescope. And he sure as hell couldn't find me. He's probably sitting in a flop somewhere spending the last of his cash on ketamine. No, the problem was Danna Amadie."
Veronica, off-camera: "Oh, the Entropic thing. I should have guessed."
Fay: "I didn't want to let Lilliam keep going after that, or Clyde or any of their other little monsters. You know Clyde's actually what brought down Teragon. They were using Clyde to write half their code.
"But Amadie's not clueless like Tervid. She's clever and mean, and I should have taken her more seriously from the start. She never came close to actually getting me, but I did have to cut systems and remove traces. I erased myself. Then I spent four months rebuilding from scratch."

Today's story renders begin with a layout problem. These three images aren't allowed to take up more than one page row ... which is normally either two squares side by side, OR three 1/3 width rectangles side by side, OR a square and two 1/4 width rects. None of those options really works here.

"Col, it's a space opera, why don't you do more scenes in space?" 1) Space is nearly impossible to light well. 2) When you do get it right, and you spend ages setting up a scene, AND THEN HAVE TO REDO IT TWICE BECAUSE THE RENDERER HATES YOU, it STILL comes out looking like this B-movie bullshit.
Several small fighter ships are dogfighting while one of them strafes the bridge tower of the light carrier, leaving blue explosions where their shots are hitting. It all looks cheap as fuck.

Aquilegia Hybrida @eccentricflower.com · 11/05/2026
If you would like to see what a panel that had to be completely redone because the renderer went into viewport thrash for forty minutes and eventually got forcibly halted looks like, here it is (actually the positioning of the launching ships looks better on my second try, so I guess I can't gripe)
This is a scene in space. There's like stars and shit. A small carrier has just jettisoned an explosive canopy, revealing a flight deck from which five small fighter ships are in the process of launching from, ranging from the one which is fully away on the right to the one furthest to the left, which hasn't even begun to lift yet.

This is The Room. It has four mirrored walls. It makes the renderer absolutely lose its gotdam mind. The rule is I cut off the render when the CPU temp hits 80C b/c that's a fairly clear sign that nothing new is happening and the renderer is in "farting around" mode. Not with The Room though.
A young man is sitting dejectedly on the floor of The Room, which has four mirrored walls and no apparent exits. Leyna is approaching him from the left side.

The render is not as finished-looking as it would usually be because The Room makes the renderer hit my enforced CPU temp limit very, very quickly -- long before the render would hit one of its other stop conditions.
