2/Saw a total of four matches of both women's and men's singles and the competitors were world ranked! Very cool and interesting to watch. As the only Redcoat to play squash (40+ years ago!) they were asking me questions in the pre-meeting I was having a hard time answering 😏

1/Thursday I was volunteering as a Playhouse Square Redcoat to the most unusual "show" I've ever worked there. It was Day 1 of Squash In The Land at the Outcult Theatre! The Professional Squash Association members played in a see thru squash court in the three-quarters around setting.

7/ It was mid 30's and wet with sprinkles/flurries. But the golden rod and grasses that the egg cases were attached to were darker from the moisture than the lighter tan egg cases making them easier to find.

5/ We were very successful, finding 55 Chinese and 2 European egg cases. With an estimated 200 larva per egg case, we removed ~11,000 bad bugs! 😁

2/ The two types of egg cases we were looking for were laid by Chinese and European mantis.

That's not an egg case, that's a gall. Galls are formed by insects burrowing into a plant's stem, causing the stem to swell and grow around the insects. Most galls in this area are caused by midges.

There's a Chinese mantis case. It looks like a a small toasted marshmallow.

2/Saturday I helped staff the Owl Biofacts table where we had owl pellets to dissect. What's an owl pellet? It's the regurgitated undigested remains (fur, bones) of what owls eat. The owls there eat mice and chicks. Some guests are more comfortable handling owl pellets than others.

1/Saturday I was helping at Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Nature Center with a special event: Owl Hoot-ennany! It's an annual event that celebrates owls. The park has an education building that includes an outdoor-facing owl aviary that houses several rescued owls.
