Reposted by Peter Lacey 🇺🇦Fabian Education Policy Group @edufabians.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Really looking forward to hearing from Ian Widdows on the problems with High-Stakes Accountability at our next FEPG meeting on Monday 28th September 7.00pm-8.30pm. More details below @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social @brianhudson.bsky.social 025
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 03/09/2026Exam Boards must conform with regulatory requirements but ... "Whoever hath an absolute authority to interpret any written or spoken laws, it is he who is truly the Law-giver to all intents and purposes, and not the person who first wrote or spoke them." Bishop Benjamin Hoadly 1717. So, beware! 000
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 03/09/2026They are showing that they believe convention is more important than concept. 120
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Agree. Though clearly a locality issue, Sec 14 Educ Act 1996 does not impose a mandatory duty on LAs to provide sixth form places. Many multi-academy trusts are geographically widespread and do not always prioritise locality needs. Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 does not improve this. 010
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 29/07/2026That said, the content at school should be broad and varied enough to retain all learners' interests & engagement so that their curiosity is not dampened. Curiosity and confidence to find out and have a go are fundamental to the "capacity to learn new things". 010
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 21/07/2026It's the school system that needs to be re-aligned onto the purpose of education. 010
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Pearson also has close working relationships with ARK esp with ARK Curriculum + and Oak National. There appears to be some overlap with ARK on Pearson VUE. They are significant players in the English education marketplace and have influence on national policy. 100
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 14/07/2026A classic example of provision designed through the lens of the teacher rather than the lens of the learner. 000

Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 23/06/2026A bit like the difference between air speed and ground speed of an aircraft. Air speed takes account of prevailing winds. 010
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Exactly. It's mischief making. Vary the vocabulary to manipulate meaning. It's prevalent. There are LA maintained schools and DfE maintained schools. We taxpayers fund both. There is local accountability in the former, by design. There is not always local accountability in the latter. 031
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 21/05/2026The dilemma of having responsibility without power is summed up in this ChatGPT enquiry regarding LA duties to promote welfare of all children under Section 11 of the Children Act 2004. It will be interesting to see if 2026 Act makes any difference. chatgpt.com/share/6a0e93...chatgpt.comSee what this chat's aboutOpen this chat to take a look. 110

Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 26/04/2026The language has shifted from one of education to one of schooling. For example: ▪︎ Teaching is now delivery; ▪︎ Achievement is now performance; ▪︎ Knowing is now retrieval; ▪︎ Curiosity is now compliance....... 090

Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 05/04/2026So much for leadership modelling the expected behaviours of those they lead. In any business setting he would be sacked by the board. 000
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 03/04/2026It reminds me of a challenge to a class of 11 yr olds which I called VIEWS. I purposefully used the term oblong to describe a non-square rectangle. 001
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 27/03/2026I always thought that prayer was an act of subjugation to the believer's God. Isn't that personal subjugation the complete opposite of domination? 120
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 14/03/2026I will be concluding my celebration of pi-day with a re-enactment of Comte de Buffon's 1777 needle experiment. Cocktail sticks and lined paper are prepared. 010

Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 27/02/2026PM's post-G&D by-election commitment to do more of what he is already doing too much of does not bode well for Labour. 000
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 22/02/2026Once all schools are in MATs it takes little to permit profit making. Then the whole system can be sold off. Similar to energy. It's teeing up the system for privatisation. I have a good clue who the bidders will be. Said as much 15 years ago. Gove has re-entered GOVErnment. 000
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 14/02/2026Agree. @joboaler.bsky.social in Math-ish refers to "getting a sense of" before "making sense of". 010
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 11/02/2026Got to be careful with language. An inclusion base in a school, when a school itself should be a base for inclusion, could be misinterpreted. 020

Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 07/02/2026There's something special about DIY in maths. After all, we all have to construct our own idiosyncratic maps of understanding. I remember my group using straws & pipe cleaners to construct a 3D representation of a hyperparallelopiped. Over 50 years ago! 010
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 25/01/2026The expanding universe of mathematical knowledge is the outcome of human endeavour. A mathematics curriculum should recognise and celebrate this. Learning to think & work mathematically is a precondition to the acqusition of mathematical skills and knowledge 011

Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 11/01/2026Good luck with the webinar. As a start, please help your audience understand the difference between description and definition! 020
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 11/01/2026Imo fuzzy language is often associated with fuzzy concept. An example of one of many irritants is: find the area of a circle. 120
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 11/01/2026I think I might be agreeing with you! I believe there is a stage of "getting a sense of" a concept which precedes and enables "making sense of" that concept. The transition is assisted by moving from an informal language of description to the technical language of definition. #UKMathsChat 130
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 12/12/2025And us oldies recall Galbraith's argument on the futility of a model of growth driven by stimulating demand and neglecting basic needs. 000
Peter Lacey 🇺🇦 @ecarda1.bsky.social · 20/11/2025I think a reason might be in your headline: ....resistance from the schools THEY are trying to turn around...... School 'improvement' can be effected only by those within. However, it can be facilitated by careful external assistance. 020
