Thrilled our paper is out now in AJS. Parents & scholars have long known the linked fate of schools & neighborhoods, but how does change in one domain relate to the other? We (@ebruch.bsky.social) propose a theory of coupled tipping & find support for our model in data over 20 yrs & 3,000 schools.

A favorite graph that never made it into a paper. Circa 2014: "What's the worst personality trait someone can have?" by place of residence. Being boring is a sin in the Boston/NY corridor. Arrogance? Not so much. Immaturity reigns in the South-Central. Best of all, New Orleans: no sense of humor.

The same traits that shape women’s desirability in dating markets—race, education, body type, parenthood—do surprisingly little to predict inappropriate contact from men. The main dividing line is age. A reminder that this behavior is less about attraction than about dominance and opportunity.
