Public support for fundamental institutional change is much broader than conventional wisdom suggests extending to aspects of Congress and the Executive Branch. Maybe it's time to rethink outdated institutions more broadly to help democracy work better for everyone #ourbesthope

Why not implement bolder fundamental change? My work suggests we need constitutional entrepreneurs (who are not politicians that benefit from the current system) to push for such measures. Also, why stop at the Court? 2/3

Shocking! Biden is now in favor of institutional reforms to the Court? Public support for change may actually mean something! Still, changing life tenure in Art III with legislation is like putting a band aid on a gaping wound that will be subject to legitimate. const challenge. (1/3)

Frustrated by originalist conceptions of the constitution chipping away at our rights? Why not have a meaningful debate about changing the way gov institutions can & should work for citizens today? There’s more support than you may expect! Jefferson was a fan of periodic revision. #Thinkforourselves

Yes that true, but weights by ideology can be super decisive. I guess I’m wondering a la Marilynn Brewer if there is some cross-cutting identity we can use to group existing local cong (or watershed) dists that is not state based, so ppl. feel like they will gain rather than loose from the endeavor?

Ok. I get that — but why even geographic regions/localities. These days feels like people in mid-sized cites across the country have more in common with each other than they might with people in rural areas of their own state … seems like there may be more relevant bases for representation.

I ask because I have never heard a satisfying answer in why state representation is still justified given migration pattens accompanied by advances in communication/mobility. I’m willing to listen. Just think we should start a meaningful conversation about how to make the system work better…

Serious quest re: inst change Malapport in the Senate gets replicated in the EC, so why do we continue to privilege regional(state) representation over other kinds in our tech. advanced society? Are there smart (nondevisive) alterns. that might be serve democ better? Creative ans encouraged! Polisky

Partisan & anti-intellectual rhetoric makes it likely citizens will come to their own understanding of how rules apply with important implications for gov authority. Recently, there has been talk about CHANGING the rules of the game wrt the USSC, filibuster, and Electoral Coll. 4/14

Ch5. Valuing The Supreme Court. Using national survey data from 2019 I explore how people think about retrospective benefits from decisions of the Court over the past 75 vs. 15 years. I also explore prospective risks assessments over the near and more distant future. 10/15

Pt II. As institutional change can involve substantial risk, I suggest prospect theory can inform understandings how ppl. think about it. Those who perceive personal/societal benefits from governing inst. will resist change & those who perceive losses should support it. 9/15

Ch3. Explores how ppl. assess credibility of ‘legal experts’ commenting on matters of gov auth. As in other domains, partisanship, education & age matter. Ppl. are more likely to credit experts endorsing views const. w/ their policy preferences. Evid suggests this serves esteem. 7/15

Ch2. Experiments on nat surveys test how citizens perceive judicial, legis, and exec action. Ppl. are most likely to see action across branches as legitimate when they have reason to think officials are following required procedures. But rules do not curb role of polit. factors. 6/15

Pt. I. How do people think about appropriate use of gov auth? Using psych theory I posit rules AND political factors (ex. citizens’ pol prefs, feelings about officials) will matter across branches. I predict rules should constrain political factors in such judgmts. 5/15

Intro: Elites commonly use charges of const overreach to fire up their base. These days constitutional interpretation is a game anyone can follow. Some listen to legal experts the media employs to help ppl. understand the action, others to their favorite tv/radio pundit. 3/15.
