YES! Love my bass AND bassists! My votes: James Jamerson - the Hook, the 🐐, Funk Bros., MOTOWN! Verdine White Larry Graham Gail Ann Dorsey Pino Palladino (not pictured) Bootsy Collins (not pictured) Louis Johnson (not pictured) Bernard Edwards (not pictured) Ready Freddie Washington (not pictured)
James Lee Jamerson (January 29, 1936 – August 2, 1983)[2][a] was an American bassist. He was the bassist on most of the Motown Records hits in the 1960s and early 1970s, though Motown did not credit session musicians on their releases until 1971, and is now regarded as one of the greatest and most influential bass players in modern music history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. As a session musician he played on twenty-three Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits, as well as fifty-six R&B number-one hits.Verdine Adams White (born Verdine Adams Jr.; July 25, 1951) is an American musician, best known as a founding member and bassist for the band Earth, Wind & Fire.[1] White was placed at No. 19 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 50 Greatest Bassists of All Time".[2]Larry Graham Jr. (born August 14, 1946) is an American bassist and baritone singer, with the psychedelic soul/funk band Sly and the Family Stone and as the founder and frontman of Graham Central Station.[1] In 1980, he released the single "One in a Million You", which reached the top ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. He is credited with the invention of the slapping technique on the electric bass guitar, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass, although he himself refers to the technique as "thumpin' and pluckin'".[2]

In 1993, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Sly and the Family Stone.[3] He is also the uncle of rapper Drake.Gail Ann Dorsey (born November 20, 1962) is an American musician. With a long career as a session musician mainly on bass guitar, she performed regularly in David Bowie's band, from 1995 to Bowie's last tour in 2004.

Aside from playing bass, she sang lead vocals on live versions of "Under Pressure" (taking the part originally sung by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury) and dueted with Bowie on other songs, including "The London Boys", "Aladdin Sane (1913–1938–197?)", "I Dig Everything", accompanying Bowie on clarinet,[1] and a cover of Laurie Anderson's "O Superman".

From 1993 to 1996, Dorsey also recorded and toured with Tears for Fears, and collaborated on songwriting with the band. She appeared in several of the band's promo videos throughout this period.

Her diverse range of work includes performances and recordings with The National, Lenny Kravitz, Bryan Ferry, Boy George, the Indigo Girls, Khaled, Jane Siberry, The The, Skin, Gwen Stefani, Charlie Watts, Seal, Gang of Four, Susan Werner, Ani DiFranco and Dar Williams.

In addition, Dorsey has released three solo albums: The Corporate World (1988), Rude Blue (1992), and I Used To Be... (2003).

Early life
Dorsey grew up in the 1970s in West Philadelphia. She played guitar from the age of nine and cites Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad, Terry Kath of Chicago, Jimi Hendrix, and Nancy Wilson of Heart as early influences. She acquired a bass guitar shortly after her 14th birthday but did not consider herself a bass player until she was 20.

This was me, 6 years ago, during the pandemic. I was setting up my Canvas site for the fall, boppin my head to John Handy's 1976 classic... talk about déjà vu! Only thing that's changed is the institution. Silver lining of academic purgatory is teaching my brilliant students. And it's hard work!

Gentle reminder, very genuine: this was a Dem primary. Here's the 2024 Michigan map. The ground game in SE MI is important because northern Michigan outside Traverse City and west Michigan outside the cities is ruby red.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Main article: 2024 United States presidential election
2024 United States presidential election in Michigan

Nominee	Donald Trump	Kamala Harris
Party	Republican	Democratic
Home state	Florida	California
Running mate	JD Vance	Tim Walz
Electoral vote	15	0
Popular vote	2,816,636	2,736,533
Percentage	49.73%	48.31%

The 2024 United States presidential election in Michigan took place that November 5 as part of the 2024 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. Michigan voters chose electors for Donald Trump and JD Vance to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote. The state of Michigan has 15 electoral votes in the Electoral College, following reapportionment due to the 2020 United States census in which the state lost a seat.[2]

Due to the state's nearly even partisan lean and the close margins by which it was decided in 2016 and 2020, it was considered to be one of the seven crucial swing states in 2024,[3] though many viewed it as the most difficult of the seven for Trump to regain, even harder than Nevada, the only one of seven Trump never won in 2016 and 2020. However, contrary to polling data, Trump flipped Michigan back into the Republican column, defeating Kamala Harris by 1.42%. This made the state 0.06% more Democratic than the nation at-large and therefore the closest to the national results. Michigan shares with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin the longest active streak of voting for the winning presidential candidate, having done so in the last five presidential elections. Altogether, the three states have voted for the same candidate in nine consecutive elections, dating to 1992.

This was the first election since 2012 where Michigan voted more Democratic than the nation as a whole. It was also the first election since 1988 that Michigan voted more Republican than neighboring Wisconsin.

Three things can be true at the same time: 1. "Black don't crack." 2. "I don't look like what I been through!" 3. Aging gracefully is its own blessing. This is me at 38 vs. 48. I'm on this fantastic voyage along with everyone else. Women frankly don't owe anyone eternal youth; maturity is DOPE. 🙌🏾

So many people died from guns and AIDS. So much pop culture was about that, from Boyz in Da Hood to RENT. Generally, I assume those with the loudest mics in 2026 grew up way more privileged than a lot of us did. I'm most nostalgic for my early childhood. Crack and AIDS hit the D when I was 8.
A Time Before Crack by Jamel Shabazz (Author), Claude Grunitsky (Author), James Koe Rodriguez (Author), Charlie Ahearn (Author), & 1 more Format: Hardcover

Once upon a time before crack, inner city communities were blighted by poverty and unemployment—but not by the drug wars that tore families apart, destroying lives with needless violence and mindless addiction. Once upon a time before crack, pride and style were as inseparable as a beatbox and mixtape, or as a pair of shoes and matching purse. Once upon a time before crack, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of New York City, capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared.

Best known as Hip Hop’s finest fashion photographer for his blockbuster best-selling monograph, Back in the Days (powerHouse Books, 2001), Shabazz revisited his archive and unearthed an extraordinary collection of never-before-published documentary photographs collected for his third powerHouse Books release, A Time Before Crack, a visual diary of the streets of New York City from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties, Shabazz’s distinctive photographs reveal the families, the poses, and the players who made this age extraordinary.

Yes! That's exactly why I loved Toni...she's from Maryland, but I heard post-Motown Detroit's Anita Baker in her sultry contralto. When I was little, Black Boomer Detroit was obsessed with the group she came from, Chapter 8. Everyone my age or older here knows their self-titled album back to front.
Chapter 8 is the debut studio album by the Detroit, Michigan-based group Chapter 8. It was released in 1979. It was their only album to include lead vocals from Anita Baker before she went on to solo stardom. The album for the company that was little noticed, except for the Baker-led minor hit single "Ready for Your Love".[2][3][4] The single, written by David Washington, prefigured Baker's solo career in a duet with bandmate Gerald Lyles, backed by Derek Dirckson on drums Michael Powell on guitar and Courtten Hale on saxophone.[5][6][7]

DISCO Network Presents - Content Creation and the End of Social Media
Thursday, February 26, 2026 | 4:00 - 5:30 PM ET | Zoom
Event Description

Is social media still social? With the spread of content creation as a business, political strategy, and pastime across platforms, where is the space for sociality in social media? This panel examines the role of engagement farming, influencer culture, misinformation, disinformation, and AI in reshaping social media as a creator economy. In a digital landscape where we all serve as content creators and/or unwitting sources of valuable data, we explore whether social media is still a desirable avenue for forming and cultivating community, engaging in organizing strategies, or simply being social.

This event is free and open to the public. We especially encourage all interested faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to attend. Advance registration is recommended.

Meet the Panelists

Nice try, MAGA, but the truth is in 40 million people's DNA, in hundreds of slave testimonials, eyewitness accounts, and the Federal Writers' Project. Trump wouldn't even have a White House to desecrate if it wasn't for enslaved laborers. Recommended reading:

Went to grab the link to my article from almost a decade ago about children's literature whitewashing George Washington's slaveholding. It was published in the journal Social Education. Colleagues, if you didn't know, AI is now summarizing our articles on Google. I'm pissed. This is not OK.
AI Overview
Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, in collaboration with James Joshua Coleman and Lindsay R. Cicchino, argues for teaching a more complex, accurate, and critical narrative about George Washington and slavery, moving beyond simplified picture books to examine him as a "flawed founder". They emphasize that Washington's legacy is defined by his, and the nation's, deep contradictions regarding liberty and human bondage.
Context on Washington's Views: Washington privately expressed a desire to stop enslaving people and supported gradual abolition in the 1780s and 1790s, yet he continued to rely on enslaved labor and did not publicly advocate for abolition, fearing it would tear apart the new nation.
Contradictions in Action: While expressing "regret" over owning human property, Washington signed the 1793 Fugitive Slave Act and, according to YouTube video, used loopholes to keep his enslaved workers in Pennsylvania from gaining freedom.
The Enslaved Experience: Washington managed Mount Vernon with high demands and, according to YouTube video, was considered more severe by some contemporaries than other owners. He kept strict records, separated families, and, according to YouTube video, forced the sale of individuals to the West Indies.
Teaching Perspective: Thomas argues that children's literature must move away from portraying enslaved people as merely happy or complicit in their bondage—such as in the controversial book A Birthday Cake for George Washington—and instead confront the reality of slavery in his household, say Thomas et al..
Washington did ultimately arrange for the emancipation of his slaves in his will, but this only occurred after his death in 1799, and they were the only slaves freed by a Founding Father.

From that link. Granted, they're counting all forms of CA, not just SA.
Where and how does child abuse happen?

Most child victims are abused by a parent.
In 2022, a reported 434,000 perpetrators abused or neglected a child. In substantiated child abuse cases, 76% of children were victimized by a parent or legal guardian.

Child-on-child abuse is common. At CACs in 2022, 16% of people alleged to have abused a child were themselves children (in cases where we knew the age of the alleged abuser).ii

Nationally, neglect is the most common form of abuse. Three-fourths (74%) of victims are neglected, 17% are physically abused, 11% are sexually abused, and 0.2% are sex trafficked.

One of the only pieces of non-African Diaspora art in my home is a large print of Waterhouse's Lady of Shalott. I went to the Tate in 2001 and saw it in person for the first time. Listened to the audio guide recite the poem... and tears were running down my face. smarthistory.org/waterhouse-t...

Yesterday’s dinner was grilled chicken kebabs, Aldi’s quinoa and brown rice, and caprese salad with fresh basil from our garden… with leftover pitas from Yasmeen’s Bakery. Mom does most of the cooking but didn’t feel well. Not my best plating (to say the least!), but the meal was a huge hit. 🍽️
