I wore out this elbow darn before Easter - finally covered it up. There's also a couple more (tiny) holes at the edge of the ribbing. Not having the right size hooks, I ended up embroidering a couple of flowers (crocheting would've taken much, much less time) […] [Original post on mstdn.social]
A turquoise cardigan with the sleeve positioned over the body. You can see the previous (rectangular) darn in brown and pink woollen yarns. I wore through it and patched it up with pink embroidery floss.
Below the sleeve, you can see where the ribbing meets the body of the cardigan. Towards the button band on the left, is a small navy darned patch. To the right of this are a couple of embroidered daisies - yellow centres and white petals. They look quite niave because my hand sewing skills are terrible, but they also look a little cute.
I can now wear it for at least another year!

Another cardigan, another hole...been sitting around, all summer, waiting for me to do something about it. Well, I did. Finally darned this hole... A little annoyed really as it's just on the inside of the elbow, somehow. So you can't really see the fix when […] [Original post on mstdn.social]
A rectangular stitched patch covering the hole and laddering seen in the other photo. There's a chunk of purple stitching in the middle of the rectangle, which is surrounded by dark blue embroidery thread.
It's not the neatest of stitching and it didn't really form the pattern I was hoping for, but it was the first attempt at this type of darning (not that I can remember the name of it). No worries though, I've more holes I can practise on (fortunately or unfortunately).A pink cardigan with part of the sleeve pulled over my daring disc, showing both the hole and the laddering (above and below the hole). The fabric is also beginning to wear thin around the hole but that's not really visible in the photo.

When you realise that you don't have enough carrots for the carrot tarte tatin but you do have onions! And a lump of unidentified pastry in the freezer from Christmas, but it may be older. (Turned out to be flaky pastry but I still don't know when I made it.) […] [Original post on mstdn.social]

Two sets of small cakes, all sitting in two orange silicone trays. There are round shaped ones on the left and, on the right, larger heart shaped ones - these ones are upside down in the photo because it's the only angle I could get without having a huge light flare on the silicone, from the kitchen light! (Part of this flare is still visible on the left hand side because I couldn't cut it out completely!)
These have just been taken out of the oven and were still very warm. Too warm to remove from the molds, so I couldn't eat them then! (I have now though!!!)

The old and the new. #FensterFreitag
A photo taken from the inside of a moving tram, on a raised line, with blurry buddleia in the foreground. Below that, at ground level, are some cars (probably parked but I don't remember now).
Behind them are several types of red brick buildings, from simple 2 storey ones (side on) to larger, 4-5 storey ones that were clearly warehouses or factories when they were originally built (back during the Victorian era, if not earlier).
Behind them are several glass high rises of differing heights and shapes, one side shining in the sun, and reflecting the light blue sky and clouds floating by. Some of these high rises though, are reflecting the buildings in front or to the side of them.

One of the benefits (the only?) of all the cool, grey weather we had earlier in the spring, is that the roses everywhere are putting on one heck of a show.
This is a set of 5 blooms, in a sort of crescent shape, against a background of deep green leaves (not all of them from this rose bush). The flowers themselves are a light orange colour, fading out to a pale orange centre, light yellow further up the petal, and a little pink blush edging the petals, as the flower opens and blooms.

A bunch of flowers, sitting in an unseen vase, all from my back garden.
There are purple geraniums (which I call Big Blue, to distinguish it from the pink ones that are trying to take over the garden), large pink peonies (of varying hues, depending on how open they are), and a few stems of pale yellow-green astilbe.
I've added some fern fronds towards the back, and some deep burgundy leaves of a plant whose name I can't remember, but it has little yellow flowers and I think begins with L.
It really does look like one of those deluxe bouquets that florists charge an arm and a leg for.

5 bright orange poppies standing proud amongst the greenery surrounding them.
There are lots of unopened buds surrounding these poppies, promising more flowers to come.

I say orange but they've come out more red in the photo than they actually look.

(There is a sixth orange poppy but it's very much shorter than these, and can barely be seen from this angle.)A single bright red poppy, with dark purple centre and markings.
The petals have creases in them, making it look like they are made from a crinkly red paper.3 pink poppies standing upright, surrounded by various green plants, none of which have started flowering yet.
2 of the poppies are in front of each other, whilst the third one stands alone, off to the right of them. A bunch of small yellow poppies growing at the side of the garden wall/fence.
Unlike the other poppies, these will self-seed, throwing the seed out as the wind blows. If I'm around at the right time, I gather some of the seeds (from the seed head) and try to sow them where I think they have a chance of growing next year. More often than not, they won't grow where I want them but they're still a little pop of colour and delight wherever they do.

Chocolate muffins tonight: #BeyondBaking #MardiPatisserie
Chocolate cupcakes just out of the oven. Some are still in the heart shaped mould (4 closest to the bottom of the photo), whilst some have been taken out and placed directly onto the rack (8 mini cupcakes at the top of the photo).
Some of the mini cupcakes are the right way up whilst some are upside down, but all are cooling down/drying out.
Of the heart-shaped ones, some are overflowing out of the moulds because, clearly, I overfilled them with the batter.

A not quite #SilentSunday ! The big white fluffy clouds and blue skies were chased away by this👇:
A brown roof that's got white stripes running down it, due to the hailstorm we're currently having.
Water (rain? melted hailstones?) is running down the window, making the roof tiles look smeared. Quite a few hailstones are bouncing off the tiles but you can't see that in this photo. Thankfully, I'm not under that roof because the noise is almost deafening!

A view through the curved back window of a train carriage, at the little stream loco pushing/pulling the rest of the train along a hillside. The joys of having to book tickets in advance - you have to put up with whatever the weather decides. #FensterFreitag
The sides and back of the carriage are glass/thick plastic to allow you to see the countryside/hills.
Unfortunately, it was raining so all that could be seen was whatever was directly at the sides of the railway line.
At this point, there's a stone embankment on the left and a few conifers just behind the loco on the right.
The people sitting (their heads and shoulders just visible) are all looking a little cold, a little damp, but busy chatting to each other.

8 heart shaped cupcakes sitting, haphazardly, on top of a grill rack. The icing on top of the little cakes has run off, and you can see the drips running down the sides, and drops of white icing on the baking tray underneath. It's a thin icing so the top is an opaque yellow-brown colour, unlike most iced cakes these days which come with a thick layer of white sugar on top, making most cakes far too sweet.

Spring comes in fits and starts. Happy Mothering Sunday. #SilentSunday
A bunch of yellow daffodils in a clear crystal vase. Just at the bottom left of the vase are a load of green stems (and the blades of a pair of scissors) that I cut off the daffs...
These were growing in my back garden until yesterday. The weather was such recently that they had started to bloom but the winds, rain, icy hail that we had on Friday meant that the top heavy blooms fell over, to become food for the slugs and other ground dwelling creatures.
So, I had to cut them and bring them indoors.
They are now on my mum's dressing table where, she tells me, they are emitting a subtle, sweet fragrance.
(And it's the only bit of brightness and Spring, seeing as how the weather has gone all crap again.)

The same pink geraniums (with red centres) from the same plant as the previous post back at the beginning of the year. (I took the photo a few minutes ago, even though it looks like all the previous photos of this plant.)
The plant had stopped flowering and looked like it was finished, or, at least, needed a long rest... But, somehow, something got kickstarted and it started throwing up buds again, and those buds started opening. There's currently 5 stalks, all with multiple flower heads, and a couple more that have just started budding.
This plant has now been flowering for over 6 months, possible 9 months. It really likes this little corner of the bathroom!

A promise of Spring to come. #SilentSunday #BloomScrolling
Two crocus buds, still unopened, amongst what looks like waste ground but is actually a flowerbed in the garden. As it's been rather wet, the ground is looking rather claggy and there are clumps of moss visible amongst the dandelions and other weeds that are beginning to sprout between the dead sticks and leaves of plants that died back last autumn.
(Phew, that was a long sentence. Sorry! I should've stopped for a breath earlier.)
The crocus buds stand out against the browns and greens because they are a gorgeous deep golden yellow, with reddish-brown veins going up the petals. They stand on pale green stalks, and their long, thin pointed leaves are dark green with a white vein running up the middle.
As it is supposed to be dry (and whispers, possibly sunny) for the next couple of days, perhaps they will open fully soon.

Who would've thought that when I bought the geranium back in the spring, that it would still be flowering in the new year?!

There are 2 heads of flowers prominent in the centre of the (portrait mode) photo. There is a third head, with fading flowers, towards the centre back/right.
Below the heads are green leaves; the heads themselves consist of a number of bright pink flowers, all with red centre markings.
Behind is a glass window with swirly piss, through which to can make out a dark green colour (of trees) and bright blue above (of the sky).
And yes, although it's very cold here, we've not had any snow and I'm jealous of all the snow pictures I've been seeing.

It was sunny yesterday and I noticed something white sticking out of the ground... And here we are, a bunch of white onions with bright green stalks, and a lot of dark soil still clinging to their roots. (All lying on top of brown cardboard, in a vain attempt to dry out and catch the soil.)
I bought a bag of onions right at the end of the planting season, when the bag was less than half price, as an experiment.
Turns out that they'll struggle in the front garden, which was drier than usual, but will grow, albeit slowly, in the back where they can get whatever afternoon sunshine we have.

I was tidying in the garden and pulled out what looks a lot like a spring onion, earlier today.
It is sitting on a white dinner plate. The green leaves are long, making it much longer than the diameter of the plate. The roots, on the other hand, are so numerous and long, you could use it as a (very unruly) paintbrush!
Now, I said it looks like a spring onion but, when you smell it, it is very clearly garlic! It never did form a bulb... In fact, just moving it in here to take the photo, and this room now smells of garlic!

It turned out to be a miserable, grey, cool, wet Sunday. Needing something to cheer me up, I decided on scones with clotted cream and home-made quince jelly.

11 mainly green pears all lying (on their sides) on a piece of cardboard.
We've had some not very good weather recently, so most of these fell off the tree and have bruises where they landed. Luckily, I found them before the slugs/snails/other creatures did. I'll go out later today, to see if I can rescue any more, especially after yesterday's stormy weather.
Even though they feel hard, once you cut them, they are soft and oh so delicious, so delicious.

Managed to get out into the garden between showers today. I'm so excited! I've got courgettes!!!!!! For the first time ever!!! Ok, they're not as large as I thought they'd be, and the flowers have rotted, but I managed to get some the slugs/snails/woodlice didn't yet eat! #Gardening
6 round, yellow courgettes in a colander. One has a small but thick piece of stem still attached whilst another has a green end. The other four all have brown ends where their flowers have rotted. There is also a single, courgette flower - it fell off the plant whist I was cutting these courgettes from their stems.5 small, yellow, round courgettes growing under large green leaves. Three of them have no flowers because they've rotted off whist the other two still have their flowers attached. Hopefully, they will grow a little more/larger and I'll be able to pick them in a couple of days.

A small green tomato hanging off a plant. Next to it is the bamboo cane supporting this plant, with a green cane topper in the shape of a flat flower. The topper is about 2cm in height, which is about the size of the tomato. None of the seeds were from cherry tomatoes but from normal sized ones; I really hope they'll grow more, I really do.Another tomato plant with a small, green, very unripe tomato hanging in the centre. If you zoom in, there looks to be little flecks of yellow (pollen maybe? I don't know) on the edges of the tomato and on the stems. There are a couple of even smaller tomatoes barely visible, and quite a few out -of-focus yellow flowers (in varying stages of openness).
These tomatoes are a flat green colour, unlike that in the other photo, which seems to be darker at the top, almost forming dark green stripes stretching down over the body of the tomato.
These seeds weren't cherry tomatoes either.

A very large window (part of a wall of glass) where one panel occupies almost all of the photo. There's not much to see, apart from some grey-brown buildings in the very bottom right hand corner, and what looks to be a Swiss flag (the only real bit of colour, but it's so small as to be easily missed).
There is a huge cloud of varying shades of grey, occupying the majority of the photo, rolling from left the right. The bottom edge looks to be floating not very far above the ground; the leading right edge, which is very dmark, has wisps of cloud rolling out towards and just above the buildings. The patch of brightness just above said buildings is going to rapidly be gobbled up by this mass of angry weather. In no time at all, heavy rain is going to come down.
(The weather here this week has been all shades of unending grey, but the rain has not been as dramatic. But there is hope that that little patch of blue sky that's about to be eaten up in the photo, will return, and will spread to even here, and the sun will shine again.)

Was going through some files and I found some acetates. Must be from 95-6. I could just wipe off what I wrote, and reuse them... But what for? Does anyone still have an OHP?
Acetates talking about excitatory amino acids used in gravy preparation. The green instructions are rather faded but you can guess how tasty the gravy was. Apparently, potassium may or may not be affected in gravy and who knows what happens to schizophrenic gravy - I, unfortunately, didn't make any notes about that.

A head of geranium (pelargonium? I don't know what the difference is) flowers - they are bright pink in the centre, and this is surrounded by red which then fades into the same central bright pink at the edges if the petals. There are 5 petals to each flower and multiple flowers per stalk (there are 4 flowers visible on this stalk, which itself is not visible). It lives in my bathroom so you can just about make out the dark green leaves in the background, and a beige and blue patterned pot, off to the bottom left of the photo. It is such a flamboyant plant that stuns everyone who sees it. I just wish it wasn't the very last one they had (because it looked very much like the runt of the litter!) because I would've liked to have bought more of them and put them all around either the house or the garden.

A pink multi-petalled rose. The outer petals are all pink whilst the ones closer to the centre are pink towards the edges and base, and a lighter pink in the middle of the petal. It is sagging due to the weight of the petals and all the rain and wind and rubbish weather we've been having recently. (Saying that, this rose bush prefers the cooler, wetter weather as it has really bloomed recently.)
There are green leaves of the rose bush and other plants surrounding this flower.
It was a good thing I didn't bend down to smell it's glorious fragrance (well, it would be if it wasn't wet) because there's a small yellow and black stripey flying insect immediately to the left of the flower, presumably flying into it.

In the background are a couple more stems of foxgloves, standing proud against a large green bush and a blue fence. On the ground, mainly in the bottom left corner, amidst the greenery, are small yellow buttercups. Up on the far right hand corner, is a sliver of blue sky. This photo is of a rather striking red poppy from the side of the flower head. Because the camera clearly has problems with red, the petals look more like a thick cellophane than a petal. This is a pale pink hairy poppy from above. It has dark purple (almost black) splodges on the inside of each petal, near the centre. The stamens and anthers are a very similar dark colour. The petals of this one are so thin they look like they're made from paper - an origami poppy, so to speak!3 orange-red (tomato red?) hairy poppies, all with dark stamens and anthers at their centres. (No dark splodges on the middle unlike the pink poppy.)
There are many unopened buds surrounding these three. (These are also the first of the hairy poppies to flower.)Finally, the last poppy photo. These are not hairy ones but your normal type that propagate by flinging seeds around. As a result, there's a bunch of yellow poppies at the edge of a border. They look like large buttercups, but just a shade lighter in colour, although you'd only know this if you could see some buttercups (which you can't, but I could because there're some at another side of the garden).

If someone has to deny that you sound like Enoch Powell, then perhaps we've all read/heard it wrong; if it has to be denied multiple times, then perhaps you are taking a leaf out of Powell's book/speech. #UKPolitics #Immigration
Headline from the politics live blog on The Guardian's website today: "Starmer completely rejects suggestion he echoed Enoch Powell in immigration speech, Number 10 says".
Below is a link to another article titled: "Starmer's immigration speech completely different to Enoch Powell's, says Yvette Cooper". (For those who don't know, Cooper is the Home Secretary.)

The yarn chicken is going to win. I have 2 rows left to stitch, and then all the edges to close up, and I don't have a big enough ball left. 😢 I do have another ball but I'm unsure if it's the same colour or not, because whilst this one is named, that one's […] [Original post on mstdn.social]
A piece of crochet in a golden yellow yarn. There is a crochet hook with a red handle, and a few bulb pins, sitting on top.
Above the work is what remains of the yarn - a small, scraggly bundle. I have to use that to try to finish off the last 2 rows. It's no wonder that the piece has been in time out for the past couple of weeks!

And still he doesn't listen. Will he ever pay attention to the poppers? (Probably not.) #TOTP
4 posts all basically telling Peter Powell to keep his hands to himself (instead of on the audience).

Mother's Day treat. #HappyMothersDay to all who celebrate; happy Sunday to everyone!
The mild version:a samosa on a saucer, covered with (yoghurt) raita and a bit of red sauce. Behind it is a takeaway box containing 2 dahi wada in whatever raita hasn't been taken away already! The spicier version: another samosa but this time covered with the same raita, and then topped with green sauce and homemade brown sauce (tamarind chutney).

I could either pay £1 for a bunch of daffodils at the supermarket, or I could just go in the back garden and pick up all the ones that had fallen over after last night's weather. Still no sign of the ones in the front opening yet. #Flowers #Bloomscrolling
A bunch of yellow, multi-petalled daffodils in a glass. They look so bright and cheery but, upon close inspection, the petals are a little translucent. I'm guessing the temperature was a little too cold for them.

A couple of days of warm weather and the daffodils in the back garden finally started to open. A couple of warm days does not mean a couple of days of sunshine though; only one was sunny. And that probably explains why the daffs in the front garden are still closed. #SilentSunday #Bloomscrolling
Two daffodils standing proud in the back garden. The back one is still closed, but the front one has all its petals open. (It's not your usual trumpet type, but one with multiple petals.)
Behind the closed daff, you can just about see a blue plant pot with some green stuff sticking out of it. Behind that (and both daffs) is blue fencing with white-ish fence posts. (I didn't paint them last year so it's all looking less than pristine.)
Just over the top of the open flower, the sun is shining, illuminating the open petals beautifully.

@heapy Thought you'd appreciate this👇: #BigVimto
7 rectangular slices of sponge cake, all in cardboard surrounds, sitting on a tray, under a plastic lid. The slices all have swirly pink cream icing on top. At the two ends of the icing are 2 blueberries, and in the middle are a couple of slices of strawberry. Right on top of the strawberry slices are what looks to be a little sprig of baby nettle leaves? (Well, it's probably not coriander or flat leaf parsley, or mint; I've no idea what it may be.)
To the right is a little sign reading "Vimto cake, £4.50".

Some time before lockdown times, I bought a little blue & white jug containing muscari bulbs - mainly because I wanted the jug. I planted the bulbs in this green pot but they never flowered. Year after year, green shoots came up but no flowers. As I didn't need […] [Original post on mstdn.social]
A green plant pot sitting, half in the sun, in front of a brick wall. Inside the pot are 4 blue muscari flowers, standing erect, but in differing directions. There is a mass of long, spiky green leaves at the base of the pot.
You can't imagine how happy I am that my bulbs in a reduced priced jug, finally flowered!
