Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 16hI have returned to that book so many times. It's without doubt a must read. 030
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Great piece! I'd love to see this inspire many more Oberlin Luddite Clubs going forward. 110
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 03/10/2026This. So much this. I do not understand why some people are so eager to do away with thinking for themselves. 080
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I have opinions, but this sounds like one for @bcdreyer.social. 000
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Looks like I'm going to have to start adding a footnote to every one of my WordPress posts: "I used Bob, my 2018 Lenovo YOGA 730, to produce this story." (Note to publishers collaborating with tech bros: Stop anthropomorphizing algorithms, you credulous weirdos.) 040

Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Such a great book. I'm reading it right now and so much enjoy looking at that cover every time. 010

Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 19/09/2026What a fascinating story - definitely worth reading from start to finish. 010
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I am so sad to hear this, Michael - my heart goes out to you all. Dr. Romm was a source I turned to regularly when I was writing about green energy and sustainability. He had a great way with words and knew how to communicate complex topics clearly, persuasively, and with real personality. 😢 150
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 17/09/2026AI's not the main topic of this research, but it comes up. Fortunately, the study finds that most people don't consider AI chatbots to be a top source of news. 010
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 15/09/2026They gained a new fan in me today. Listening to their album "Before We Change Our Mind" now. 0210
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Yes, I can't quite explain why DKR compels me so much more than the other two films, but there you go. In fact, the first time I saw it was in Spanish (my Spanish isn't fluent), and it blew me away. 010
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I do agree. There's no question that the morality of Batman is questionable - not only that the violence is "necessary" to counter a "worse" evil, and that his behavior is explained/(justified?) by his childhood trauma. But to me DKR was so much more compelling than the previous two films. 110
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Just listening to this right now, and it's lovely. I'll be sending a few $ Beoga's way, and via Bandcamp, not that other music place: continentalrecordservices.bandcamp.com/album/before.... 1243
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 15/09/2026It's a fantastic film. I'm a Nolan fan, but don't care much for his first two Batman pix. I think this articulates perfectly why The Dark Knight Rises resonates with me so much. 100
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Another great commentary, Alan. It's pretty clear that Trump's motivating force for everything - lately especially - is, "If he can't have it, no one will." 0111
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 07/09/2026This is so good. I love the thoughtful distinction between different types of AI: LLMs, machine learning and translation, coding agents, etc. And this paragraph sums up my feelings perfectly. 241
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Duolingo, wtf is this? Because it's certainly not a good German vocabulary lesson. 120
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 05/09/2026The logical conclusion: "AI is accelerating the erasure of distinctions in student research between peer-reviewed scholarship, non-scholarly writing, and internet slop." 010
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 05/09/2026This subtly but consistently steers LLM users' perspectives away from less-predictable ways of thinking. As the author writes, LLMs "thwart the process that might lead students toward original interpretations in the first place." 110
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Yes, I really appreciate how this piece identifies the "insidiousness" (author's word) of how LLMs distort our perceptions & critical thinking. They do this not by being completely wrong (even when their sources are hallucinated) but by framing their outputs using the most predictable perspectives. 100
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Yes, I really appreciate that they didn't leave any ambiguity about that - which is something that far too many other journalists and news outlets do to avoid "offending" readers/viewers/listeners who have no clue how scientific hypotheses and research work and have little interest in learning. 1211
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 03/09/2026This is an excellent explainer, thanks. Puts Steinem's CIA involvement in context in a very clear and straightforward way. 050
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 01/09/2026I love this description: "when you design these systems, you're building a pinball machine for words, with different levers interacting to bounce the steel ball of language moving against other levers and mechanisms." "A pinball machine for words" is a brilliant analogy. 020
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 29/08/2026There does seem to be something unique about Dutch, though: a few Dutch speakers I've encountered seemed convinced they knew English better than me (they didn't - LOL). The idea of mashing up a Dutch accent with a claim to be from Appalachia is bold - clearly worked for Parker! 010
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 29/08/2026My step-dad, on the other hand, came here when he was around 20 and always kept a strong Hungarian accent. The "th" sound especially eluded him. No way he could hide he wasn't a US native. 100
Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 29/08/2026The accent thing is fascinating to me. Growing up, friends always said my Mom has an accent, but I never heard it. She came to this country at 12, so right on the cusp of the age where someone loses or keeps an accent. 100

Shirley Siluk @ebishirl.bsky.social · 26/08/2026What an amazing drawing, Arula - so much rich detail! The Robie House was pivotal for my career: I had a summer job working as an editorial assistant for the U of C alumni magazine, which was housed in the Robie House garage. The experienced persuaded me to drop geology in favor of a writing career. 020

And I love your take on this fight. That's the kind of thinking & strength & determination we need more of from journalists, unions and defenders of democracy. Awesome win! 070
