(Also also, please be good at grammar and fact-checking on your own. A newsroom has a lot of moving parts and your team is counting on you to make as few mistakes on the easy stuff as possible!)

You've got a lot more to lose by never taking chances than by trying something that might sound weird or silly or dumb. If you can articulate why it's interesting and why your audience might think so too, someone else in the newsroom will help you shape it into something the newsroom can support.

But also, just be really curious about absolutely everyone else's job and beat. You never know what's going to catch your eye. And just love the thing you love. I got to create my vintage Coach feature because I saw videos over Thanksgiving and it absolutely lit up my brain!

A lot of people are trying to figure out how/whether to use AI, how/whether to get good at vertical video, how/whether to invest in new platforms. I'd say finding ways to ~collaborate and ~leverage existing resources (make a team to make a thing!) within a newsroom is a valuable skill these days.

Oh, good question! I mean, the obvious one is do not do it for the money or the stability. But what kind of journalism is he interested in? My other instinct is to say that anyone with a good grasp of strategy and an interest in backing up an argument with data and metrics is in good shape.

What a beautiful example of someone taking unloved objects and putting care and craft into them to give them new lives. Am reminded of this patch I need to sew onto my bag as a reminder. #DHmakes

The immersive interactive exhibit features items recovered from the Israeli trance music festival, a major site of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks that launched the war in Gaza. Yet the Nova Exhibition is determined not to sink into tragedy alone.

Where are Chicago’s lead pipes?
Lead water service lines are all over the city. But majority Black and Latino neighborhoods bear the biggest burden, our analysis finds.

There will not be a healthy US journalism industry without public funding. The PBS/NPR defunding shows we are heading in the opposite direction. Journalists must understand that our fight for existence is political, like it or not. Wrote about this for CJR today: www.cjr.org/analysis/jou...
