I remember dabbling with Linux back in high school. But it's changed a lot since then; and so I reached out to @eayoung.net to get in on the action. Check out how the journey went here: youtu.be/UIN2Q2u1A8o

This is an 8 hour documentary. I've been putting off watching it. You'd think it must be all filler. You'd be wrong. This is hugely impressive work by @pandamonium.bsky.social I always saw FMV games as filler. Not so the people who made them. Not so me anymore. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM-I...

I had no idea there was a place you could go and just grab microcontrollers/SBCs and electronics supplies

A strange hypothetical, I know, but I've been thinking: I love planes - Wouldn't it be awesome to own a private jet? Maybe even one with gold fixtures! It'd cost so much to operate though... That's "multiple homes" money. Not to mention the environmental impact! I could never.

I had the dumb idea to hook up a Koryuu composite-to-component transcoder to the RetroTINK-4K to see what it'd look like. While the RT4K has more robust filtering, the result of being able to dial in the sample rate over component is even composite video pixels get really sharp!
A screenshot depicting the main menu of the 240p Test Suite for NES, ported by Damian Yerrick. The "Sharpness" option has an arrow next to it. This screenshot was taken with a real NES connected to a Koryuu transcoder over composite, connected to a RetroTINK-4K via component cables. The sample rate per line was set to a multiple of 341 (240p). The text is very sharp, but has subtle colour splotches around each letter. In addition, the screen has subtle diagonal lines across the green/brown background, and there are sawtooth-like artifacts on the character graphic and text box's border, a consequence of the fixed-function comb filter used by the Koryuu transcoder.

The text is sharp, but has a slight horizontal blur; As a consequence, it has more visible fringing, but less expansive "rainbow" artifacts are visible. The green background is clean, and both the character's lines and text box border are more solid, with only a subtle ripple effect thanks to better comb filtering separating luma (brightness) from chroma (colour).

I feel like I need to explain some things. Clear facial distortion aside, some people like the DLSS 5 image because it's high-contrast and looks like film looks like. But that's not what reality looks like. Cameras need a whole lot of light to not look like a fuzzy mess.

"Character rendering is transformed."
A screenshot from Nvidia's DLSS5 announcement, showing a character from Starfield with "DLSS ON". The face appears to be replaced by a diffusion-generated one, with differently shaped and coloured eyes (the right eye, viewer left, is substantially larger than the other), and apparently incorrect perspective. Next to the "DLSS OFF" shot, it looks as though the face has been lasso selected in Photoshop and rotated/moved. The chin appears broader than the original.A still from Nvidia's DLSS5 announcement demo reel, showing the "DLSS OFF" version of the same character. The face is generally symmetrical.

Addressed to Twitter but: I worry for the people who rely on LLMs to fact-check; They aren't all-knowing, nor even especially clever. At best, they go by the information available to the public, same as anyone else, no more - Usually with a delay. They also have access to the same misinformation.

TIL that the NES "blacker than black" palette entry 0d is not just blacker than black, but imitates a sync pulse that can cause TVs and scalers/capture devices to lose sync. What's more, The Immortal on NES used it to gain 1 more shade of grey. I've yet to be able to run it.
A screenshot of The Immortal for NES; It is largely scrambled and illegible due to the capture device (a RetroTINK-4K) detecting the game's use of "blacker than black" palette entry 0d, which mimics the usual voltage for a horizontal sync pulse and causes each line of the image to end prematurely and disrupts the normal timing for horizontal sync.

Apparently there are rumours that Windows 12 is coming this year and will not only double down on Copilot, but introduce a subscription model for it, despite requiring an NPU. I refuse to believe Microsoft is stupid enough to try the heated seats DRM trick.

Messing with the RetroTINK-4K's latest experimental firmware, shrugged at the new high-pass filter until I tried it on my 2-chip SNES... RT5x's pre-emph did similar, but the RT4K seems to have finer control. A 2.00 MHz HPF (3.00 for hi-res modes) very nearly fixes the smear for me.

Well this is a pleasant surprise. Believe it or not, I have a video written about this game's "sequel", F-22 Total Air War. Not many people remember these games now, but this has excellent damage modeling+wingman control+stealth, and an AWACS mode that makes the game into an RTS/"sim-medium" hybrid.

I’m not at CES but I feel it’s appropriate to say: AI will not save us. AI is a great tool, good at plenty of things. But it is a tool; It matters who uses it, & for what. It’s unprofitable, so ask who benefits, how; & whether that’s OK to you. AI will not save us.

Something very normal I think about a lot is that still using GIFs in current year is weird. It was a very limited format to begin with, albeit by design. I admit dithering does have a certain retro charm…

I had a whole thing written up about the Collective Shout thing but TL;DR people like this have been around since forever and that they're only now gaining global influence is weird and frankly alarming. Platforms have their hands tied because the alternative is to not be able to do business.

I think this is interesting for a different reason: A lot of the same people who are pushing what we call AI are the people who were big on NFTs and crypto. I think there's a difference in how media influences people's perceptions more than we like to think. But there is yet another angle to it.

Today was Canada Day, but in Newfoundland it was Memorial Day. At Beaumont-Hamel in WWI, the Royal NL Regiment were ordered to follow up a failed attack presumed successful. Left in clear view of German guns, they were decimated. At school, I recall more WWI history than WWII.

Watching the Switch 2 launch is interesting. I don't really feel a great need to have one, but some people are going nuts for it. From my perspective, it's eerily like a WiiU situation where they launched without any software to back it up.
