Today Melissa Lewis over on BlueSky pointed out that the font used in the infamous "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy campaign was actually designed by Just van Rossum, whose brother, Guido, created the Python programming language (https://bsky.app/profile/melissa.news/post/3ln7hx5rhcj2v) She also pointed out that the font had been cloned and released illegally for free under the name "XBAND Rough". Naturally, it would be hilarious if the anti-piracy campaign actually turned out to have used this pirated font, so I went sleuthing and quickly found a PDF from the campaign site with the font embedded (https://web.archive.org/web/20051223202935/http://www.piracyisacrime.com:80/press/pdfs/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf). So I chucked it into FontForge and yep, turns out the campaign used a pirated font the entire time! 📎

SCOOP — The US sent Iraqi refugee Omar Ameen to Rwanda via new diplomatic relationship in which they've agreed to act as a "third country" for deportees unable to be safely returned to their country of origin, per cables reviewed by me. This is first reported instance. Cable indicates more to come.

i still think domain verification is a great solution but as someone who often explains DNS to large bureaucratic institutions these days, trust me when i say that quick and easily recognizable account verification is necessary too. especially for verifying authenticity in moments of breaking news

because bluesky can't just not follow local laws, its an international website and as such needs to follow all applicable laws. what deer.social does is just not apply the @moderation-tr.bsky.app labeler to users in Turkey (which the normal bluesky website is required by law to do)

GPT-4.1 is API only… I wonder if this will stay like this or if it will eventually get added to ChatGPT (I believe the latter)
Sam Altman (@sama) on Twitter says: GPT-4.1 (and -mini and -nano) are now available in the API!  these models are great at coding, instruction following, and long context (1 million tokens).  benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world utility, and developers seem very happy.  GPT-4.1 family is API-only.
