A lot of rich people own them and gamble on them, and get them to compete in arbitrary contests, paying others to breed new ones and train them up. The general public is encouraged to bet on them too, but a lot of the big investment is from oligarchs competing for status.

It’s always odd to me when I get asked if I am wearing a mask because I am sick. In my experience, these days most people wearing a mask are doing so to prevent themselves getting sick, and most people who are sick don’t wear a mask at all.
