Doing a distillation. I thought ‘I’ll bet that stuff fluoresces.’ Yup.

Thanks. I do what I can where I am. I truly see it as a privilege.

I need to do a bunch more, then. But I agree.

No disagreement. It’s powerful, and is both empowering and dangerous.

One of the best parts of my job is getting to mentor young people. I learn more than they do, no doubt, but I think passing on passion for exploration is imperative.

I support it but can’t imagine it happening. Low population states get too much leverage to give it up, I suspect. Bad for democracy, but that is, alas, by design.

Programming small, WiFi-enabled boards to read temperature and communicate with one another, to monitor the temperature of a furnace remotely and broadcast an alert if things get out of spec. There are lots of commercial ways, but this is fun, inexpensive, and educational for our students.

Making deep eutectic solvents. You put two solids together and get a liquid. They enable all sorts of weird chemistry; lately I’ve been using them to dissolve biomass and also to plate out aluminum, doing research on batteries.

Thanks. She’s doing well. Never have gotten a solid answer on why she makes a lot of them. But she’s learned things to make them less frequent.

I stumbled on your notebook, and was really fascinated by your essay on ‘Learn to build vs build to learn’. Guess I consider myself an applied scientist, and really I love the loop involved, oscillating between science and engineering. My aim is to produce good stuff- knowledge or things.

My lovely wife makes a lot of kidney stones. Here’s a screen pic of a recent one. I have the luxury of immediate access to an SEM, and have followed hers for about a decade.

I’m slowly coming back to social media life here. X is a portal to look into hell, and Facebook is a constant reminder that people I grew up with don’t understand how anything works. Not politics, not science, not arithmetic, not economics. But I’ll keep an account there to see family pics.

The narrative shifts are whipsawing Maga. The NOLA attack was Biden immigrant mayhem, then the driver was discovered to be a vet and an American born citizen. Then it became Biden’s fault because Islam, or something.

Occasionally I look in at the bird bin to see what idiocy is circulating. It’s depressing, usually. One of the constants is Musk worship. How much is sincere and how much is manipulation, I don’t know or care to discern. But it inspired me to haul out this. www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...

I respect your choice, of course. I kind of see this as a growing pain. Some of it is the desire to build up quickly after having the rug pulled out at the bird bin. And I suspect that leads to perverse incentives ie popularity contests. That said, I’m still hopeful.

020

Dave Eaton @eatonmachine.bsky.social · 28/12/2024

I’d second that. Using other platforms we get used to what the algorithms do without us knowing. I sense that the norms and practices here are still developing. There was a time years back when the bird site seemed like a barren whistling wasteland, and then it didn’t.
