Tried the new mattress in the car this evening, it fits! Just. Wheel arch gets in the way a bit. Comfy though, spent about half an hour just chilling out there, laid out on it.

I’m not really aware of anyone doing it round here, tends to be parts of the country with incredible scenery / easy access to coastline etc. But I’ve found some great spots around Herts for it.

I’ve got this aforementioned spot in mind, but also thinking of trying one in a car park near the town centre. Most of these are free 6pm to 8am and no signs prohibiting sleeping in your vehicle.

Went to check out a potential spot to car camp this evening. It’s on the edge of Hitchin but feels proper remote, think it’ll be a winner. It’s on park4night so has clearly been used before.

I’m still a social creature like non-autistic humans are, but the right sort of social interaction is very hard to achieve. I like being near things going on but at a safe distance, if that makes sense? I think car camping gives a bit of that. I’m closer to things happening, but in a safe way.

Weirdly, when I was a kid I had this recurring dream where I was in this kind of pod that could fly about, but was invisible to the outside world. I think that was about how hard I found it to connect with people.

I can’t afford something like a T4 camper yet, or I’d be using that. I can find a spot almost anywhere to safely and legally park up and stay overnight, for just the cost of petrol and food (and the sunk costs of the jackery etc), using the family car I’ve already got.

I’ve always liked the feeling of being closer to nature, waking up somewhere and you can just step straight out into countryside. But also being in a town or city very late at night when it takes on a sort of magical, liminal air.

Why go car camping, though? Well, for me it’s a little escape. Being AuDHD I find I need time on my own, more than some might. To recharge. And I’ve never been camping in a tent, it always appealed but felt a bit too vulnerable, so in a car feels much more secure.

I did a test camp outside my house and that was fine, really enjoyed that. But I should have capitalised on that momentum and got straight out for one in the wild.

I’ve got a car I can do it in, I’ve made window covers and bought a blackout curtain, an air bed (not ideal tbh) and temp platform to support it in the footwell, a Jackery, 12v kettle, electric lunchbox, even a little piss bottle.

I’d only do it somewhere it was legal to park overnight, no signs forbidding overnight sleeping etc. You tend to get those more in the coastal / scenic spots anyway. I’m going to be stealth camping very locally, to start with.

For those not familiar with this more recent special interest of mine: car camping is basically what it says. You convert the space inside your car into somewhere you can eat, sleep etc. Often done ‘stealthily’ in public places with blackout window covers / curtains.

Oh, I shouldn’t have said anything. 8 minutes from my home station we’re being held because of an incident affecting the train in front. Weirdly the same thing happened at the start of the journey, when we got to Newport from Cardiff.

Travelling home from Wales, got off at Paddington, walked through to the Elizabeth line, walked straight onto a waiting train, got off at Farringdon and again straight onto a Thameslink train to Hitchin, and I’m even sat in the same seat I normally sit in when I travel home from the London office.
