We found two interesting patterns: - GM reduced photosynthesis by reducing photosynthetic capacity or stomatal conductance (varied by species). - While mechanisms that drove responses to GM were species-dependent, both species showed stronger negative responses to GM later in the growing season.
Two-panel plot for Trillium app (left panel) and Maianthemum racemosum (right panel) showing tree canopy status on the x-axis (open or closed canopy) and Anet (or net photosynthesis) on the y-axis. Garlic mustard treatment is grouped for each x-axis value. Compact letters are shown in both plots to demonstrate statistical significance.

We collected photosynthetic measurements from two native understory plant species growing in a long-term garlic mustard (GM) removal experiment in Pittsburgh, PA, testing photosynthetic mechanisms that drive native plant responses to GM and establishing whether GM impacts varied temporally

Woo, final week or two of A/Ci curves until field season comes to a close! Excited to see what these data show about garlic mustard impacts on native plant carbon budgets.

(Sleepy) Doge and I are Pittsburgh bound! En route to four months of collecting gas exchange data to quantify carbon budgets of native flora growing in a manipulative garlic mustard removal experiment!
