Longtermist Logic and a Double Defect
Longtermism is at base a strain of the moral theory consequentialism. Longtermists tend to insist on their own uncertainty about the correct moral theory (see MacAskill, Reference MacAskill2022, pp. 186–187; Ord, Reference Ord2020, pp. 56–57; and Bostrom Reference Bostrom2024, p. 24), but this superficially modest gesture hedges bets within only a restricted range of positions. Despite their uncertainty-claims, longtermists lay out consequentialist arguments that equate value with wellbeing and so count as utilitarian doctrines (for more on longtermists’ notions of value and wellbeing, see Crary, Reference Crary2021 & Reference Crary2023).

The real answers are out there. The facts can be mined right onto the blockchain of truth. All you need are power, faith and a little prompting
Build with AI
I can prompt the right AI tools to get a real result, using AI as a tool rather than a replacement for thinking.

Teachers, books, and humans are unecessary. Universities are a scam. The professors are the enemy. Let machines do your thinking while they tell you are finally thinking for yourself.
With no teacher, textbook, or study guide provided, teach yourself a full unit of a college-level AP course in five days.

Receive Feedback
I can take critical feedback without falling apart.

The test
While wearing a heart-rate monitor, listen to a recording of your parents giving you at least three pieces of honest, critical feedback. To pass, you have to take it in calmly and bring your heart rate back within 10% of your resting baseline. It is a lesson in hearing hard truths without shutting down.

Through Bootcamp, failure becomes common rather than shameful, and students learn to recover faster, figure out what they need to change, and keep going without it affecting their sense of self. T

Indeed, the does not appear to be, thus far, any legal or ethical ways to build GenAl technologies as they are currently understood. Nonetheless such 'everything machines' promise us unlimited choice, infinite synthetic optionality. Two prominent architectural forms of Authoritarian EdTech are Hostile Architecture and Monumental Architecture. Benjamin (2019) illustrates hostile architecture via cruelly designed park benches that excluc homeless people from public spaces via environmental force. Authoritarianism requires hostile architectures for the creation, criminalization and persecution of 'others'. Trump terminated educational

AI is in things we say:

AI is a powerful force, and we can't ignore it. It is up to us to harness it and use it wisely
AI is a calculator on steroids. We will learn to use it just like we haveused other educational technologies.
AI is like an intern or a co-pilot that can augment or complement human capabilities in education, but not replace them.
The arrival of AI is like that of social media, oil or tobacco. It is pushed by big companies, and its long-term effects on us are as yet unknown
Resisting AI is like going back to the Stone Age. Technology enhances and improves education when we use it intentionally and ethically.
Using AI is like eating sausages. You don't want to know what it's made from, or what it's doing to your cognitive agency.
AI is toothpaste that has come out of a tube. We can't get it back in, so we should learn to integrate it into our practice.

Consentless technologies are those we become habituated to, in our educational spaces and workplaces, that sprout new features overnight, which not-so-subtly demand that we use them: "Would you like me to write this for you ?"

Another critique of this framing is that people could potentially be forced to use harmful tools. For example, I have heard that Grok is a harmful tool and that it has been used to create deep fakes, explicit and pornographic non-consensual pictures of women and children. I have never tried it myself. Do I need to create a Grok account and make pedophilic images before I have an opinion on whether this tool is useful or not, before I can question it?

Moreover, if we use something, it does not always follow that we then understand it, or what we were doing with it (nor indeed what it might have been doing to us). In discussions about Al, an experiential element is sometimes offered as both an uncomplicated requisite and a simultaneous cause of learning. (Velander, Örtegren, & Sperling 2026)

'Self-compassion,' he writes, is 'a much-underrated virtue.' He argues that medicine has become too focused on crisis since the advent of antibiotics, and has lost sight of the more holistic approaches to mental and physical suffering that existed before the profusion of modern drugs"

Really interesting work by Dr Fiona Concannon @teltales.bsky.social at #EdTech25 on surveying students about their digital learning experience
So, what's this all about?

Who we are in CELT

We primarily work with staff, helping them develop their digital competencies.

We also engage with students through our DigiChamps project.

In 2019, we participated in the Irish National Digital Experience (INDEX) Survey, a national study on digital learning.

We've also part of CUTIE a project that Includes partners with the Uof Copenhagen, doing similar survey work to encourage open discussions.

Our Study

In January 2025, we surveyed all undergraduate and postgraduate students and received over 1,209 responses.

For comparison, our previous INDEX survey in 2019 received 2,937 responsesWe asked students who supports them the most to use digital technology in their learning

Social media: where papers go to flap freely
Every writer I know feels this way about someone else. Writing is such a solitary activity. You have no assurance that what you're creating has any value, and any indication that you're behind in the rat race sends you spiraling into the pits of despair. Keep your eyes on your own paper, they say. But that's hard to do when everyone else's papers are flapping constantly in your face.
