In July, @ajc.com spoke with E2I2 about the problems behind building data centers too quickly, with incomplete data on impacts to public health, local economies, and the environment. These data gaps create uncertainty for thousands of people across Georgia. Gift article (free account required):

OpenAI’s $20B data center dominated Georgia headlines. But it wasn’t alone.
OpenAI's plans for a $20 billion data center near Savannah made national headlines. But two other sprawling data center projects in Georgia were also made public the same day.

E2I2 joins organizations across the country in emphasizing that removing the legal obligation for federal actions against greenhouse gas emissions will have adverse, long-term impacts on public health and quality of life, and intervention to protect communities is needed, now. www.e2i2.org
The EPA 2009 “endangerment finding” has been officially repealed.

If left unchallenged, this removes federal obligation to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and will dismantle critical legal frameworks that support national environmental and climate programs against carbon emissions, and drastically reduce public accountability against industrial polluters.Publicly available environmental data overwhelmingly support the lived realities of our community partners: greenhouse gas emissions from burning and extracting fossil fuels impose compounding costs of healthcare, electricity, insurance, and food, increase socioeconomic inequities, and degrade our natural environmentThe Environmental Equity Information Institute joins other environmental, health, and climate justice organizations across the country in urging greater investment in building the capacity of environmental justice communities to understand and respond to toxic pollution challenges.

Deregulating federal emissions standards and dismantling taxpayer-funded information infrastructure does not change our shared climate reality.

Vision 2030 — Environmental Equity Information Institute

E2I2 is expanding our Southeastern network of solar-powered, customized, community air monitors. Here’s why:

According to the EPA, there are over 10,000 regulated air monitors in the US. Only 5,000 of them are currently active. (1)

Studies indicate that regulatory air monitor networks are not evenly distributed, especially in communities overburdened by hazardous air pollution. (2)

EPA air monitors typically do not monitor for individual hazardous chemicals of concern, leaving communities in the dark about harmful pollutants.

At e2i2.org, we independently collect, and simplify, air pollution data for communities at risk of hazardous environmental exposure. Our work addresses the difficulty in sourcing and interpreting scientific data for grassroots efforts against environmental challenges across the South.

Federal rollbacks on air emissions standards will increase environmental health disparities. Communities of color are already dying from air pollution at rates 30 percent above the national average. | Illustration shows 13 “person” emojis and 10 “white” emojis to represent the following statistic (per 1,000 people) - for every 10 people that die prematurely from air pollution in the general population, 13 people die from air pollution in communities of color. FULL POST:

Citizen scientists play a vital role in documenting water quality and pollution issues, keeping their communities and water monitoring networks informed about local water sources. This World Water Monitoring Day, we're highlighting the importance of ensuring communities have the training, tools, and resources needed to collect, interpret, and act on water quality data.

In places with poor water infrastructure and ongoing contamination issues, citizen monitoring programs keep water data transparent and accessible for those who need it most.

When communities can be involved in environmental protection, they’re empowered to take an active role in safeguarding their most precious resources.

👋 Let's break down some environmental data. What's PM2.5? 💡PM2.5 stands for particulate matter. In our data reporting, we use it to describe a mixture of liquid and solid particles suspended in the air emitted from sources like construction sites, roadways, industrial facilities, or landfills.
Image: photo of person wearing mask surrounded by a grey cloud of dust, covering their nose and mouth. "At unhealthy levels, particulate matter can cause asthma, heart disease, and even cancer. ⚠️ Solvay wants to expand its chemical plant operations in Augusta, GA. For the predominately Black neighborhoods that are near the facility, its emissions could pose a threat to their health. 💡Use ALT TXT to learn more, & read our initial data report: www.savannahriverkeeper.org/augusta-at-r...
In our February 1st, 2025 report, the Environmental Equity Information Institute found that Solvay Specialty Polymers released nearly 69,000 pounds of hazardous air pollutants (HAPS) in 2023 alone.

HAPS are pollutants that pose the greatest risk to health and are known or suspected of causing cancer, reproductive effects, birth defects, and other serious health issues

Savannah Riverkeeper, Healthy Communities Augusta, and the Southern Environmental Law Center are using our initial reporting to help highlight the risks posed by approving a new permit that would allow Solvay to expand its operations.

For the predominantly Black neighborhoods that reside near the chemical plant in South Augusta, expanding operations has the potential to worsen air quality. Poor air quality in the area may be associated with existing high rates of heart disease, asthma, and other respiratory conditions.

Learn more about Savannah Riverkeeper and Healthy Communities Augusta's campaign to stop Solvay's expansion, and read our initial reporting by following the link.
