Rewilding is often framed around the “three C’s”: Carnivores, Cores and Corridors. Drawing on research in Southern Africa, this study proposes three “B’s”: Bovines, Buffers and Barriers. Bringing the social dimensions of rewilding into focus. ➡️ crc-trr228.de/new-publicat...

New paper! In this essay, we propose to complement rewilding’s famous 3 C’s with 3 B’s in order to draw attention to the social dimensions of rewilding (particularly in the rewilding landscapes of Southern Africa)
A graphical representation of the paper’s argument. On the left side it shows a silhouette of a lion (top), a green circle depicting a core area (middle), and three cores connected by green lines representing corridors (bottom). The right shows a silhouette of a cow alongside the lion’s silhouette (top), a core as on the left but with a light green area around it, representing a buffer area (middle), and a protected area network with corridors as on the left, but with black lines representing barriers (bottom). The left and right side are connected by three arrows pointing from the left to the right.

🐗 New paper: What does "wildness" mean in a rewilded pygmy hog? After 12 months in Assam, I explore: rewilded hogs are liminal, meanings of wildness, taming as joint politics, contaminated freedom, animal cultures, and how conservation learns (or fails to). 🔗 Link below doi.org/10.1080/1388...

My research on elephant conservation in the KAZA TFCA was featured by @mongabay.com in an article that argues for corridors, not culls, as a long term solution for Southern Africa‘s growing elephant population 🐘 news.mongabay.com/2025/12/corr...

Corridors, not culls, offer solution to Southern Africa’s growing elephant population
Since being collared in Zambia two years ago, a young bull elephant known to researchers as Z16 has walked nearly 12,000 kilometers, or 7,500 miles — three times the distance between New York and Los ...
