(to clarify why it's not the same behavior: d.get(v, None) is the same as d.get(v) -- since None is already the default argument value for the 'default' arg)

For one that reallyyyy works the same for such cornercases you need something like: _sentinel = object() if (v := d.get(k, _sentinel)) is not _sentinel: return v But that's obviously super ugly by that point :) I prefer the explicit 'k in d' check to avoid the potential sneaky bugs

You'd unfortunately still get different behavior for e.g. 0 (first form returns it, this form still doesn't). You'd need e.g. if (v := d.get(k)) is not None: return v, but even that behaves differently if 'd' can hold 'None's. Because I got bit by this before I always aim for the explicit check now

Other consideration apart from style: if the dict can hold falsy values (empty str, None, False, 0, empty collection, ...), they don't behave the same (first would return it, second would go through else). For that reason, I'd most often use the first to be explicit in intent (unless bottlenecked)

Attached: 4 images PSA: Did you know that it’s **unsafe** to put code diffs into your commit messages? Like https://github.com/i3/i3/pull/6564 for example Such diffs will be applied by patch(1) (also git-am(1)) as part of the code change! This is how a sleep(1) made it into i3 4.25-2 in Debian unstable.

As a Canadian working in the US for the past couple years, a lot of them actually really do 😅 depending on what state they're from. It was an unsettling discovery for me. Calling it barbaric is a bit much, though. 🙂

My cursed take is the best setup is mixed; tabs for indentation, spaces for alignment. I'll stop saying evil things now. :) (10/10 for the safe *space* joke, no notes)

Not sure what it says about me, but the most unsettling part for me is no space between '#' and "There" 😱
