Well, Putin doesn't think Ukrainians exist and thus there's a genocidal war of conquest. That just comes to mind when there's denial of the existence of Palestinian people and an attempt to justify ethnic cleansing by saying they're Arabs and should f off to Arab countries.

My theory of the case is that rule of law and democracy is treated as some sort of law of nature and accusing a party/candidates being full blown nazis or authoritarians is seen emotional, irrational hyperbole.

AfD is eager to correct Nazi mistakes and do a Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and not to invade Russia. When Russia starts another war they'll cheer.

In a way Russia doesn't want to kill Ukrainians, they want to destroy Ukrainian national identity (ethnicity). Nazis didn't kill "aryan looking" Polish children but forcibly germanized them.

100% Had Russia accepted that kind of deal (I suspect EU+US assumed that in the fall 2022) Ukraine's western partners would've pushed Ukraine to accept. There was no such deal then and not now
