To be fair this is an excellent reaction to being called out. Next time any editor questions my stuff I will immediately 'launch an investigation' too.

Little side project in the works...
It's just the seed of an idea at the moment but I'm thinking of putting together a little anthology of fiction and poetry that's anti-AI (or AI Critical, Luddite, whatever term you like). It wouldn't be anything big but maybe a way to help share some peoples work and create something nice. Imagine it would be a free digital download with a few hard copies if there was interest.

So, in principle, would anyone be interested in contributing? Word counts and more specific guidelines to follow but just testing the waters really...

Some thoughts on Grok and LLMs.
Looking at what Musk's Grok has done recently, as well as the proliferation of deepfake porn, suicide & murder inciting LLMs, the promise of more 'erotic' content from companies like OpenAI (and myriad others) we seem to be heading into truly bizarre territory. We're going beyond the point where tech companies could dismiss the most abhorrent applications of their platforms as 'unfortunate mistakes' - they never were that to start with, it was always either direct intention or a negligent lack of attention that enabled these things.

And as we move beyond that point we're, generally, not seeing any state, institutional or business reaction. None that's particularly meaningful anyway. We're getting vague suggestions of guardrails or tepid regulation. This isn't a tech issue, it's not even a regulatory issue - it's a large portion of our ruling political and financial classes quietly accepting the necessity of CSAM, encouraging suicide and self harm, deepfake porn and a laundry list of other abhorrent things as the price of doing business. That's a massive cultural shift, or at least an attempt at one. To offer any tolerance of that now, to accept the half-hearted narratives of guidelines, or imperfect technologies (operating exactly as they were designed) is to allow that attempted displacement of what were, for most, incredibly basic social and ethical requirements. It's hard to parse the scale of that coming from a specifically AI critical perspective. The technology may be the catalyst for this push but the nascent culture behind it is something else entirely.

Quick thought...
Linked in screenshot:
Given the increasing glut of LLM induced suicides, deepfake porn, CSAM and other general horrors emerging from GAI I get the feeling that a lot of institutions are going to end up having something a bit like the US gun control debate. And I really don't think they're going to fall on the right side of it either, it's going to be inevitable collateral damage and negligible guard rails all round because at this point, beyond austerity and technosolutionism, they really have no other ideas.

From a critical perspective this is one that really needs to be bitten down on though. If institutions (of whatever sort) go anywhere near an AI mobilisation which has even a tangential chance of generating those kind of very visible, socially abhorrent harms then keep saying it louder and louder. In academia, for example, endorsing student use of suicide enabling porn generators shouldn't be obscured by vague tech-optimism, tell them over and over again the harms they're *actually* exposing students and staff to. They'll probably push ahead anyway but there needs to be zero room for evasion around what they're actually backing. 'It's a tool that can be good or bad' or 'we didn't realise the potential harms' should never be lines that can be said with a straight face.

Closer it gets the more this would shift opinions either way IMO, if it hasn't accounted for the shift already. There is zero reason to trust this government on data privacy or surveillance and that's a very easy argument to make.
What Information is acceptable? Britons are most willing to see their date of birth (66%), a photograph (59%), and blood type (54%) stored on an ID card. However, there is significant opposition to including more sensitive information, with 40% opposed to storing DNA details, 36% opposed to fingerprints and 34% against social security records. Willingness to include almost all types of data appears to have decreased since 1995*.

is trash. Tech Bros didn't need to work hard to sell their lies, they just needed to tap into the deep rooted inferiority complex a lot of people have.

Idle thought for the day.
From earlier...

I didn't wake up today. I opened my eyes but no consciousness came. Instead vision was obscured by frosted webs, layers of them creating intricate fractals that stretched far enough to leave reality unseen and unknown. I felt I should, perhaps, claw at them, seek to pull them aside to seek out the sharp relief of solid shapes and forms. But so far I haven't had the will to make that effort. So instead I find myself staring at the strands of this web, idly tracing them to their source, seemingly always out of sight, to see if I can find an anchor positioning them or the arachnid manifestation of some escaped thought. One seeking to submerge me as a demand for understanding or attention.

My hearing is disjointed as I stare. I choose harsh sounds to test whether the mundane ones regain their normality by comparison. But all seems off. All seems jarring and listless. A threat that makes senses unreliable, or seem unreliable at least. The lingering paranoia enough to make the end the same either way.

All that's left is my own mind, robbed of true vision and hearing, uncertain of the day's terrain and wary of the path through it, weary at the prospect of walking it. Uncertain I return to my watch, eyes adjusted to the one task of observation, an immobile mind awaiting the pattern that may clarify.

The window of governments actually caring about risk, least of all daily risks to citizens, seems to have lasted about 4 minutes.
The initiative reflects France’s push to frame AI policy around opportunities rather than just potential risks. French President Emmanuel Macron released a statement saying that “by giving access to data, infrastructures and computing power to a large number of partners, Current AI will contribute to developing our own AI ecosystems in France and Europe.”

Deepseek's hard coded censorship is interesting. You can see the initial answer appearing before the generic 'no comment' appears. Wonder what answers that model is actually putting out?

They all say ‘yes’, but they do ‘no’. That has to be it. There’s no other way to explain these figures. If they
would do ‘yes’, the figures would have improved by now. [sigh] It would be easier if they would just say
‘no’. Then you could have a conversation about it [staring blankly].

What they don't much care about however is the people being on their side, as long as they can be managed into compliance and giving up all rights to privacy, IP, human judgement etc then who really cares? This is a surrender to corporate power more than anything else.
“But the AI industry needs a government that is on their side, one that won’t sit back and let opportunities slip through its fingers. In a world of fierce competition, we cannot stand by. We must move fast and take action to win the global race.”

Some nefarious AI doings for sure, fake business, fake image, fake sob story all to shift Temu style drop shipped tat. Actually pretty ingenious really, for a scam. All replies were hidden though and no address or news stories to be found. Guarantee there's more of this to come though.
Fake business using AI images to sell dropshipped tat with the following statement:

It is with broken hearts that we share this devastating news. 💔 On January 1st, firework bombs were thrown into our boutique, Marlowe, causing heartbreaking destruction. Combined with the relentless challenges of competing with industry giants, this tragedy has made it impossible for us to go on. The world has shifted, and sadly, so must we. 😔
This decision is also deeply personal. Silas and I recently lost our parents, a loss that has profoundly changed our perspective. It reminded us of how precious life is and the need to focus on what truly matters. Marlowe has been our heart and soul, but now it’s time to heal and honor their memory.
To close this chapter, we’re organizing a clearance sale. Everything in the boutique, from elegant clothing to unique accessories, will be sold at rock-bottom prices. This is our way of saying goodbye and helping these treasures find loving homes.

We leave with gratitude and heads held high because of you, our loyal customers. You kept us going all these years, and we will forever be thankful.
With love,
Silas and Lucas

This is about pre-AI, punitive surveillance of welfare claimants but think it applies even more completely going forward with it. Ever more pervasive surveillance/datafication fuels ever more complete capacities to withdraw or deny support through automated decisions.
You have to watch every step like you are in prison. All the time you are on welfare, yeah, you are in prison. Someone is watching like a guard. Someone is watching over you and you are hoping every day that you wohn’t go up the creek, so to speak, and (that you will) get out alive in any way, shape, or form. You know “Did I remember to say that a child moved in?” “Did I remember to say that a child moved out?” And “Did I call with that five days?” You know… making sure all the time… It’s as close to a prison that I can think of.
