Proud to share the work of my forst ever PhD student and first author of this paper @dylanduerre.bsky.social!! Here, he summarizes it perfectly! #brownfat #metabolism #BCAA #heme @uwmadison.bsky.social @uofutahcihd.bsky.social

A BCAA–haem axis regulates brown fat function
Nature Metabolism, Published online: 25 March 2025; doi:10.1038/s42255-025-01266-1Activated brown adipose tissue takes up large amounts of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), but their fate remains unclear. We provide evidence of a metabolic link between BCAA catabolism and haem biosynthesis, which supports mitochondrial function and regulates gene expression by influencing the epigenetic landscape of brown adipocytes.

Haem biosynthesis regulates BCAA catabolism and thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue
Nature Metabolism, Published online: 25 March 2025; doi:10.1038/s42255-025-01253-6Inhibition of haem synthesis is shown to lead to the accumulation of branched-chain amino acids in the brown adipose tissue of mice, which reduces UCP1 levels and impairs thermogenesis.

Excited to share that work from my PhD is now available in @natmetabolism.bsky.social! Here, we uncover a link between heme production, BCAA metabolism, and thermogenesis—implicating heme synthesis in #aging, #obesity, and #T2D. Link to paper: urldefense.com/v3/__https:/... A Thread (1/15)
