We co-created DWeb Camp Cascadia 2026
From July 30th to August 3rd 2026 we got over 100 DWebbers together for our second DWeb Camp Cascadia at the Salt Spring Island Farmers Institute. Under the theme of Co-Adapt, Co-Create, Co-Here we learned and talked about many topics from decentralized technology to community practices to land stewardship and economic justice. ## Thursday Camp opened at noon for the arrival day to help everybody get situated and set up. With some ferries being delayed, the registration table stayed open until late at night but we did get everybody settled in successfully. A few folks also did make it to the performance of "Terry Riley's In C" by the Of Sound Minds orchestra in the nearby Ganges village. ## Friday Every morning, Boyd from Stretch Yoga Studio got us started into the day with an hour of yoga. Breakfast, like all the other delicious meals were sourced from local farmers and prepared by the wonderful "After Eight Catering". After a few opening words and a daily meditation by Eve from Apple Tree Meditation, camp was officially on its way. Personal Digital Archiving session in the Circus Tent Kicking us off was Wesley talking about Personal Digital Archiving and Ese leading a Solarpunk Visioning session. Then Trav Fryer talked about Custo, a kiosk for fostering and archiving the relationships between people and things. We also had some impromptu demos for various local-first apps that people were working on or excited about. After lunch, it was time for the unconference part of the day, facilitated by Emily and Ivar using open space technology. Anybody could submit a session and then gather with whoever else was interested in the topic in one of many spaces around the farmers institute. Friday Unconference schedule In the evening people gathered in the exhibition hall for board game night, trying out many different games. This included play testing "Games for Commons: a Post-Collapse Monopoly" currently being developed by members of the community. Games for Commons: a Post-Collapse Monopoly In the chill-out area, Garret took us on a journey into the fascinating world of microscopic organisms. It was a great way to wind down for the day. A microscopic journey All notes from Friday can be found here. ## Saturday After a windy night, we had our morning routines locked for the second day of camp. In the Exhibition Hall, Brewster Kale started us into the day with an introduction to Onion Press, an open-source desktop app that turns your laptop into a WordPress site and the Wayback Machine makes it always-on. Brewster talking about Onion Press The Picnic Area was all about cooperatives and community. Dawn gave us an overview of the history and traditions of cooperatives and how they look like in practice, followed by Andy talking about how co-operative ownership might be a way to make open source projects more sustainable. "Cooperate Now!" with Dawn Walker Just before lunch, LX gave us an introduction to Folk Technology, a movement born out of last years DWeb Camp Cascadia to build tech for living beings and in the exhibition hall, Emily ran a workshop on Neurographic-inspired Art. After lunch it was time for the second day of unconference. You'd think that all the good topics were already pitched the first day but that was not the case at all. We ended up with even more sessions than the day before and it was hard to choose which ones to go to! Saturday Unconference schedule After dinner and under the setting sun, DJ Graham Van Pelt put the vinyl on deck and invited us all to a boogie woogie dance party. With colourful lights, bubbles and a disco ball, the dance floor was packed right up until quiet time. DJ Graham Van Pelt on deck All notes from Saturday can be found here. ## Sunday Yoga, Breakfast, Meditation, morning sessions. We're pros at this now. At the circus tent, Terry and Terri invited us to sit with our "Ick"periences, talking about values alignment as a practical filter. In the Picnic Area, the Placed-Based Regenerative Agriculture Panel brought together agriculture, smallholders, homesteaders and agroforesters from the bioregion to share their experience. While the morning sessions were happening, local artist Peter Hatch was welcoming people in the exhibition hall to "Hours. Minutes. Seconds.", an immersive sound installation exploring how time is felt, measured, and embodied in everyday life. Piece of "Hours Minutes Seconds" On the other side of the exhibition hall, folks could also wander the final form of the D:Food web that Jenni started back at DWeb Camp in Germany and brought all the way to Salt Spring Island to continue at Cascadia Camp. D:Food/web corner It all came together in the final workshop of camp. In "The Emerald Edge" we explored collaboration between islanders, the bioregion and the greater DWeb community. The Emerald Edge The second half of the day was all about field trips around the island. In the eco-friendly shuttles from Tour Salt Spring, campers had the choice between four different field trips. * At Xwaaqw'um, we visited Indigenous-led restoration work including camas cultivation and wetland restoration, wandered through the forest, and swam in the ocean. * We toured Jane Squier's epic resource-efficient greenhouse cultivating cold-hardy citrus and avocado. * After Nick Jones spoke to the 'why' of regenerative agriculture earlier in the day, we got to explore the 'how' through a walking tour of this 80 acre family homestead and working farm which provides Salt Spring with plants, livestock, produce and soil. * We visited the Entelechy EcoVillage to explore the land and construction on it, the reasoning behind the community's choices, key aspects of their future vision, followed by a Q & A and the installation of a Meshcore repeater. Visiting Xwaaqw'um All notes from Sunday can be found here. Last but not least it was time for the open mic night. After talking all weekend about everything from low level protocol design to permaculture we got to see and celebrate the creative and artistic sides of each other. From seasoned stage veterans to many first time performers it was a silly, saucy, cheerful, heartfelt, honest and generally wonderful close to this years camp. The Open Mic Stage Overall, DWeb Camp Cascadia 2026 felt like a great success, where all the new inspiration and connection could really be felt when saying our goodbyes on Monday morning. Mark your calendars for **August 13th - 16th 2027** to meet again next year! * * * For more DWebYVR events and Camp updates, follow our Luma calendar, join our local Signal group and the global DWeb discord and subscribe to our newsletter below! ## Sign up for DWeb Vancouver A community cultivating decent & decentralized technology. DWeb Camp is over, DWeb Camp Cascadia is next!
Greetings from Germany where we've just completed an amazing week of **DWeb Camp** at Alte Hölle near Berlin, and **Local First Conference** right after. We're so looking forward to bringing the energy to Cascadia in just a few weeks! **Join us for the only DWeb event in North America this year.** At Camp Cascadia you'll get to meet Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle who will talk about his new project, OnionPress - imagine WordPress meets Tor! And we'll host a provocative conversation led by indigenous technologist Terry (and Terri) from MRF Field Tech on _values alignment as a practical filter, not just a principle._ We'll be eating locally-sourced food and talking about food systems! What we learned from being here in Germany is that while there is joy in missing out sometimes, you can not substitute the incredible power of being with a group of like-minded folks for several days, doing and making things together, and dreaming of a future where life flourishes. Plus: Yoga! Amazing DJ! Open Mic! Field trips! and so much more. _Big thanks to our presenting partner Internet Archive Canada!_ **Do not miss out!** This might just change your life, be the place where you meet the collaborators for your future projects, and discover that there is possibility for things to be different if we do things together. There are volunteer and local discounts available! Come to our volunteer info session on Thursday, July 16 at 2:00pm to get the scoop. This is also a general Q&A call if you have any curiosities you want satisfied about Camp. **Ticket sales end July 27.** Register Now

Getting to DWeb Camp Cascadia
Hello community! As the sun shines and a mild ocean breeze blows over Salt Spring Island, our global community is gathering in Germany for the DWeb camp. Here are some travel tips. ## Getting To Camp Make your travel plans now to get to Salt Spring Island! Registered campers will have access to a Signal group. All the communication about carpooling, late night pickups from Long Harbour and getting rides from Ganges to camp will happen there. If you are coming to Salt Spring by vehicle, book now and consult the Travel page. There are a limited number of vehicle reservations available for transfer on the sold out ferries for registered campers. Coming from Vancouver or Victoria with a car? Did you know that you can go to Swartz Bay and take the first-come, first-served Fulford Harbour ferry to SSI? Fulford Harbour also happens to be a quaint stop for some local flavour. Salt Spring Island map ## When To Arrive Everybody is welcome to arrive on Thursday after noon. Official camp opening is Friday so bear that in mind. Once you are done setting up your tent, if you want to help out, swing by the Volunteer Center.

Elphinstone Farm field trip report
On the weekend of May 16th 2026 we gathered a bunch of techy, farmy and artsy nerds at the Elphinstone Farm on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh nation to learn and share ideas. Over two days we set up a greenhouse, planted tomatoes, learned about mesh networking, wetland agriculture, iNaturalist and Mycelial networks, shared food and danced around the fire. ## Greenhouse planting party Folks started arriving at the farm throughout Friday with campers and tents. With the caravan and a circus tent set up as the event location there was definitely a carnival vibe in the air. The caravan in front of the farm main house Everybody got to work right away to set up one of greenhouses for a first season of growing in many years. Starting to move dirt into the greenhouse We wheeled in dirt and compost and at the end of the day had two rows of tomatoes planted and watered! Marcus and Emily getting ready to plant tomatoesFirst watering of the planted rows ## Field trip The next day everything was ready to welcome the ~50 people that came in from around the lower mainland and the Sunshine Coast to participate in the events throughout the day. ### Mesh Curious Workshops Kicking the day off, Emily and Jacob talked about decentralized, offgrid networking technology with Meshcore and how to start setting up a resilient network on the Sunshine Coast. Learn more about Mesh networking and how to get involved on our Mesh Curious Page! ### Wetland Agriculture Arturo Farias talked about the farmland with an eye to constructing a chinampas style wetland agriculture. Chinampa is a technique used in Mesoamerican agriculture which relies on small, rectangular areas of fertile arable land to grow crops on the shallow lake beds in the Valley of Mexico. Arturo shared his previous work in water reclamation around Mexico City and his own successful experiments building chinampas to sustainably grow their own food without the need for fertilizer or pest control. Arturo sharing the vision of humans as a keystone species ### Citizen Science with iNaturalist Matthew Forster onboarded us to the iNaturalist platform, a citizen science platform to identify and catalog wild plants and animals. He explained some of the community practices and set up some fun challenges for the day, all while surrounded by the dogs that were visiting the farm that day. Matthew talking about iNaturalist next to some excellent doggos ### Farm tour With iNaturalist freshly installed on our phones, our hosts Ivar and Janai took us on a tour through the Elphinstone farm. It is still nascent as a farming operation, but it's a beautiful space and they were happy to share their vision and ideas. Wandering about the Elphinstone farm ### Mycelial Networking In a cozy conversational setting, Mendel Skulski from the most excellent Future Ecologies took us on a captivating conversation about mycelial networks and the beauty - and weirdness - of the mushroom world. ### Fire dance With everybody still buzzing from the things learned and interesting conversations had throughout the day, we lit a fire and celebrated a successful day with dancing and music by Le Laboratoire Sonore until late at night. The stars coming up over the fire and DJ tent ## Winding down The next day after a hearty breakfast and teardown, three of us made an attempt at hiking the north side of mount Elphinstone. It was still quite snowy towards the end so we didn't make it all the way but we still got some beautiful views over the farm towards the lower mainland. View on the way up Mount Elphinstone On the way back we shared the logging road for a bit with a black bear that was wandering the other direction. Though friend shaped, do not pet Last but not least, many thanks to our hosts Janai and Ivar for making this happen and being so welcoming to everybody! I am looking forward to more events in the future! Co-Adapt. Co-Create. Co-Here.
We are so excited to announce **our theme for DWeb Camp Cascadia 2026**! **Co-Adapt. Co-Create. Co-here.** These themes weave through everything we do at Camp. ### Adapt We are living into the cultivation of relationships and technology that will support resilience as we go through the challenges of these times. We can adapt and develop the capacity to support each other and care for the land we're on. ### Create Last year we discovered the magic of coming together and making Camp our collective project. We want to continue this in 2026, where we'll have enough structure to support everyone to have an amazing time, with great opportunities for exploring, learning, cooking, eating, and playing, while also making sure there's enough openness and flexibility for everyone to bring their unique gifts and perspectives to the event. We encourage you to bring your art, personal fabulousness, and ideas and bring them to life! ### Here (Coherently!) We see Camp as an opportunity for real collaborations to be seeded and grow throughout the year. We hold Camp to help people from Cascadia to create a sense of coherence and to invite those beyond to cross-pollinate with us. The land we're on at Camp is an amazing place with a long history of regenerative practices and creativity. We welcome you here and we are welcomed by the Salt Spring community in meaningful ways. Register now! Tickets are priced at $300 until May 31st. The ticket price doesn't quite cover all the costs of hosting (and does include four nights of camping and all your meals), so if you have resources, please consider purchasing a supporter ticket, or help us connect with organizations who can partner with us. We'll be sharing much more about ways of participating, but if you have ideas, please submit a proposal and/or join us as a volunteer! Reach out.

Announcing DWeb Camp Cascadia 2026!
_We're back for the second year! If you missed out last time, get tickets early since we're likely to reach capacity._ You're invited! We will be convening on **Salt Spring Island** , BC, Canada **July 30 – Aug 3**. Get Tickets! We’ll be together for **three full unforgettable days of camping, creativity, and connection** in a beautiful natural setting! _We encourage you to arrive the night before (Thursday) and leave the morning after (Monday)._ Last year was amazing and this year we’re planning for an even richer experience. Collaborate and recharge, swap ideas, build mesh networks, dive into digital resilience and local-first tech, the intersections of DWeb and regenerative agriculture, and explore what it means to empower communities from the ground up, all centered on the _DWeb Principles_. Whether you're a builder, gardener, dreamer, coder, artist, organizer, or curious camper, this is the place to co-create something meaningful and find your people. **What to expect:** * Amazing people * Topics ranging from decentralized technology to community practices to land stewardship to economic justice * Delicious local-first food made with help from campers * Camping (Vehicles or tents) * _Open_ mic, dancing, and parties in the evenings * Blackberries in abundance * Unconference and scheduled talks * Art and experimentation * Imagining new worlds together **We won’t be able to accommodate more than 100 people total, so get your tickets early.** There’s a high likelihood with DWeb Camp traveling to Europe this year that we will reach capacity in advance. Register Now ## FAQ ### Q: Is this event family-friendly? Yes, kids are welcome! Depending on how many kids are expected, we will assess specific programming and activities, so if you're thinking of bringing kids, please register early. Note that all campers will need to be ticketed, regardless of age. ### Q: Do I need to be a technology person to attend? No, DWeb Camp Cascadia is for anyone who cares about: technology for human agency, distributed benefits, mutual respect, humanity, and ecological awareness. Campers have been artists, scientists, farmers, designers, community organizers, as well as technologists of various kinds. ### Q: Can I bring my car or RV? Yes! There is some space for cars and RVs in the camping area. ### Q: I want to contribute to programming or volunteer with Camp planning, how do I do that? When you register, you can let us know about what you would like to present. To volunteer, send us a message and we'll connect you with the right folks! ### Q: How do I get to Salt Spring Island? We can help you plan from wherever you are coming from. There are ferries from the Vancouver area and from Vancouver Island. There are also seaplanes for the jet-setters. There will likely be caravans of campers organizing closer to the camp date. This makes it look much more complicated than it is! ## See you in July! More will be announced over the next few weeks and months, but don't wait too long to get your ticket!

It has always been, and will always be, a struggle to know what and who we are. We ask the question of what it means to be human, again and again, without ever hearing a definitive answer. That’s because to be human is to have to answer that question yourself, and then do it again, over and over, with every choice that you make or unmake. Yet there are always more choices open in the future. Humans endlessly make ourselves anew: we are always more, always unfinished—and for this reason, always uncertain of ourselves and one another.

Artificial intelligence is not the first technology to place our future in jeopardy; nuclear weapons hold that dishonor. But AI, or rather the particular form of it that is the subject of this book, is the first technology that can place our future in jeopardy by preventing us from knowing how to make a future at all. AI is the first technology that can make us forget how to answer our own question. This book is about how to keep from losing ourselves and our futures in the AI mirror. It’s about how to remember ourselves, and our power and responsibility to make a world for one another.

You do not need to have read the whole thing to attend. If the reading sounds interesting to you, please come and hang out and share in our conversation around it.

Happy reading!

The DWebYVR reading group meets monthly, and the idea is to read something together loosely related to DWeb themes – anything from technical or policy papers and essays to philosophy or sci-fi imagining better futures or offering cautionary tales. Future readings are chosen by attendees at the end of each meeting concluding a current reading.

Our past readings:

Jo Freeman - The Tyranny of Structurelessness
David Graeber - The Utopia of Rules

Recap: Folk Tech Play Day
How can we make and use technology that supports us in our everyday life and is also easy and fun to use? How can great p2p, open source, open standards-based, and decentralized tech emerge from community rather than be imposed upon us? These are the questions that we explore in Folk Tech. We connected with a kickoff event at Vancouver's Z-Space on October 18. The morning began with introductions and moved on to a workshop to try out Story-Based Interviewing. Then we spent the afternoon exploring some of the terminology and moving into discussion and ideas, including some mesh network set-up, discussion about motivations in social media, and how to create "marketing" for Folk Tech. The room was packed with a range of people with different experiences, backgrounds, and technical skills. As much as anything we discussed, the energy of this group of people made the day a success. ### Folk Tech for People There's a growing awareness that technology developed in the systemic architecture of VC and extractive capitalism can't support the relationships we need for collaboration and for life. Technology that gives us the freedom and responsibility for our data and community relationships can emerge when we work in community to source needs, understand motives, and operate with solidarity rather than trying to "get users," which implies technology makers are the dealers not healers. Moving ahead, we want to offer more participatory design practices for technologists and more gatherings for people living and doing work or learning in community to find supportive and delightful technology to support them! Here's the slide deck from the event, if you'd like to revisit it! Here are some terms that we discussed- please share YOUR definitions of these concepts! * Peer-to-Peer * Local First * Open Source * Open Standards * Decentralized * Distributed ### What's Next? We plan to host informal virtual meetings to share out what we're working on, learnings, collaboration opportunities, and resources. Sign up for events here and join us on November 19!
