Flu shot is free in Quebec to seniors, those with chronic conditions, pregnant people, and a number of other groups. Everyone else can get it for a fee. I am asthmatic, mine is free. My kid gets it free at school.

As Mark Carney revives the concept if Canada as a "middle power," I am re-reading essays by the great Canadian diplomat of the 1940s and 50s John Holmes, who did so much to define the term. His 1976 book A Middle Aged Power opens with fire. "Canada, middle-powered, middle-class, and now middle-aged"

The universities that talk about being a community, not the individuals. You are no tyrant!

David Webster @dwebster.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

Incredibly hierarchical. The ones that talk about being "a community" are often the most hierarchical of all. And express indifference or contempt for the actual work of academic staff outside the classroom.

Perhaps if more university presidents acted in collaborative ways that valued employees' work, they would get more internal support.

David Webster @dwebster.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

The whole merit conversation has to be thrown in the garbage. People get to where they are because they conform, not due to merit. There are many people who have the merit to hold positions or spaces of affluence. The determining factor is “fit” which is actually compliance

Loving the idea of Dry Gods, very Lovecraftian! (Yes I know it's a typo for Dry Goods but allow me this small joy)

Haven't attended a conference in tbe USA in a long time, which means turning down some kind invitations. Academics need to boycott the US, no question.

Plenty of profs fear that if they retire, their department will be abolished. But refusal to retire is a problem. Maybe universities can create more incentives to retire.
