Three quarters of the country now opposes data center construction. The coalition may be messy, the conviction somewhat thin for many. But we see mass politics like this so infrequently nowadays that we almost don’t know how to make sense of it. nytimes.com/2026/08/31/opi…

The most important thing about the data center backlash is that, in a time of intense polarization and micro-movements, it is astonishingly large—such a big tent mass politics that any time you try and an atomize or explain it you end up diminishing it. nytimes.com/2026/08/31/opi…

Whenever I see these charts, I think they cast an interesting light on the “struggles of men” discourse. Black men, Asian men, and Hispanic men are all graduating at higher rates than ever. White men have pleateaued but aren’t falling back in absolute terms, only relative ones.

Murder is falling at the fastest rate ever recorded this year, according to Jeff Asher’s Real Time Crime Index. The previous record drop was last year (2024). The record prior to that was set the prior year (2023). Three straight years of record murder decline, and this year’s drop is twice as fast.
