Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 13/10/2026I’m wondering if this is something that was a Tim Apple led thing or more of a John Apple thing tbh 000
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Tech is so very out of ideas. Both Google and Alexa’s version had the same general response: “Isn’t this just a worse tablet?” I guess the thing that this offers is a multi-user iPad experience but trimmed down? Which I think has a pretty minimal draw? If any? 210

Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 06/10/2026From my Linux VR experience: If the game is in Unity, it tends to run pretty well. If it isn’, oof ouch my eyes. This affects Alyx, but also the Steam Home. Bonelab and Boneworks run pretty fuckin smooth tho. Anyways I hope that they address it cuz I prefer to have a Windows free househol. 010
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I struggled with it too and ended up not getting into it. It is really less a team shooter and just more aimed at the MOBA crowd and I am less into that. 010
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026sorry for the random letters being cut off. The web app‘s editor struggles tremendously on my phone when I am replying. Best vibecoded platform we’ve got besides the rest of them 010
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026You cannot look at tech without the surrounding politics around it. Tech is not apolitical and never has been. (This is wider than Waymo specificall, but a cornerstone of any discussion about tec) 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Full stop: there just is nothing progressive about Waymo. From start to finish, it is not a progressive position to take. Viewing it in a vacuum, sure. In reality? The politics of target the economically precarious is ghoulish. Enabling monopolists is fully regressive. 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Listen; I get that a lot of your drive and passion around this issue is due to the personal impact that vehicular violence has had on you. But this is not a popular stance and it explicitly one that cannot work and apply within the system we’ve got In the shape that it comes in, and be progressive 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/20264. cont. We just Do Not have a track record of being able to actually apply regulations without immediately falling into regulatory capture. Again and again and again across space and commodity and service. Rather than let the snake in; ban it at the door. 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/20263. Further entrenching the baseline of mass surveillance is still bad! It complicates removing it and makes defanging it even more difficul! 4. Where is this regulatio? If the regulation is just the paid-for-position of Google applied by municipalitie, then it is not regulate! 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/20261. Cool, let’s replace workers with robots. Very Progressive. Secondly to that: how about substituting trained cab drivers vs gig work to bridge the safety gap? 2. Further entrenching a monopolist is bad; and distinctly not Progressive. Especially with how the monopolist money is spent 210
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026You aren’t stupid! You are way too easily mesmerized by tech! And you desperately need to be better about it! It is an awful look! And you are better than that! 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The progressive argument against it is “I do not want to further cement and solidify the fascistic technocratic elites hold over society any further. I do not want companies that align themselves entirely with a fascistic regime to be involved with transit and surveillance anymore than they are” 161
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This tech has no accountability. No municipality has the resources to reasonably take Google to court and win meaningfully beyond just banning them outright. Read the room. People *hate* this shit. They *hate* big tech. They *hate* the surveillance. They *hate* the monopolization. 190
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Aside from that, Waymo serves to compete against public transit and becomes an excuse by morons to not push for better public transit because “you can take a waymo” that will barrel down someone’s pet because it wasn’t part of it’s training. 190
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Knock it off. People hate this shit. People don’t want this shit collected. It is actively used to target people nefariously for numerous things. What is the matter with you Data fed into these systems turns up in Palantir databases and into ICE hands for action! 190
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026If breaking the backs of the big data corps for effectively applying a private surveillance dragnet and wiretap system “but corporate” isn’t part of your progressive action plan: You’re not a progressive You just run that dog for big tech because you personally find it neat regardless of the issues 190
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Brother you always do this anytime someone brings up data collection concerns like the baseline stance of most of people isn’t “I want less digital surveillance and targeted advertisements and data dragnets being used to target immigrants and other minorities“ 1160

Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Kinda neat how most of the promised “goods” are things we already have but less efficiently, and the promised “bads” are just the same things we were already struggling with but At Scale. Just a net negative tradeoff because some talentless hacks in leadership have a new toy to self soothe with 010
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 25/09/2026At work I asked copilot to add a horizontal rule to a page because I didn’t know where the button was in Office365 in the web browser. It gave me a single table row instead. I asked a follow up. It apologized, removed the table, and then re-added it I installed LibreOffice after that. 011

Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Anyways. sorry for the rant but the core of what you said for writing applies so deeply in the open source software space right now and I am so tired of the bots being used to solve a crisis in project management due to oversold egos and reluctance from the olds to pass things down to the youth 010
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Now this mission critical piece of software tons of people use suddenly doesn’t work reliably after decades of stability because some old dude got chummy with a bot. His excuse was that he is old and doesn’t have the time to maintain it properly now. So he used a bot instead of handing it off. 🙃 100
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 08/09/2026There is a specific project in particular that I am thinking of in relation to this and it is SO frustrating. The project was finished and had barely seen any changes for years. Suddenly it stops working right after an update. You go look and “300 commits coauthored by Claude” 100
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 08/09/2026We don’t need to be held back by a maintainer that has found a new toy to automatically make their software project worse. We can instead pass the project over to someone who will take care of it with diligence while they goes and vibecodes some other tool that can be forgotten in a year. 100
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 08/09/2026In a similar vein, in the software space I hope that we can eventually see the same happen. Lots of old maintainers for stuff that should have handed the reins off to someone else but never did, often due to ego reasons, now damaging long term software projects. 100
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 11/08/2026To add a little bit on this, because a lot of the scene around LLMs is TESCREAL types, the cult-y flavor you mentioned makes a lot of sense in conjunction with the people around it reinforcing it. Anthropic’s CEO basically does sermons with his employees, and it reflects in Claude output. 050
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 10/08/2026The venn diagram of fash-tech and sloperators continues to overlap unchallenged 010

Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Super agree around having more browser engines. Something to break the back of the monopoly Google is enforcing for the web. Servo can’t “finish” fast enough 😭 030
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 09/08/2026The fact of the matter is is that gender is a social construct and sex is spectrum of characteristic with no hard dividing line. Any time spent waffling around that is appealing to a desire of clean and easy to segregate groups for convenience while cutting out actual living humans from that chain. 150
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Because it isn’t a dividing line to begin with www.iflscience.com/the-woman-wh... We don’t know how common this is because it isn’t something we frequently test for. We have multiple cases of women giving birth who have XY chromosomes, who only found out circumstantially. 140
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Ladybird is more fash-tech with an “antiwoke“ type at the helm Iirc There was a whole bit where all the documentation around it was written with “he” or “him” and the primary maintainer fought really hard to keep it. I hate how much drama one has to follow/discover to avoid this in new projects. 230

Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 02/08/2026(This isn’t meant as arguing or anything btw, just that I feel that people have much stronger feelings around audio recordings in general) 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 02/08/2026recordings vs video. Ask someone about how they feel about a flock camera incidentally catching you via video vs listening in to your conversations, and I think the latter would upset people tremendously more. Sorta a “Yes it has a cultural Zeitgeist. A Zeitgeist of being really fuckin hated” 2/2 120
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 02/08/2026Counter: It is illegal and a felony in many US states to record audio without prior consent. The stipulation is around presumption of privacy, so ex. Speaking quietly at a diner would be considered a presumed private discussion. I think people in general would react more viscerally to audio 1/2 110
Daniel @dv1120.bsky.social · 02/08/2026This is the gotcha with the smart glasses so far that go without eyes. They listen attentively and are designed to be audio surveillance devices instead. Some day I hope get AR glasses that aren’t just surveillance vehicles cuz I want a hud dammit 150
