It’s a scam to get their reject rate up and processing time down. ‘Reject and resubmit’ hits a rejection for them and ends processing time. Then the resubmission is ‘new’ but will be faster than an actually new one and processing time fast for that also.

And any smart people they do happen to have are too smart to open their mouths unless they have another job lined up already.

This. Bad leaders loathe people smarter than they are and do not surround themselves with such people.

I figured if Prof Famous’ paper ‘My Thing from 1987 Nobody Else Can Seem to Make Useful, Part 256’ is good enough for the shiny journals than so is everything else.

I solved my problem by stopping to worry about ‘novelty’. I decided my job was to say if there was anything scientifically actually wrong and the (paid) editor could deal with if it’s interesting enough. I started saying ‘accept’ or ‘minor revision’ almost always. Requests dried up amazingly fast.

Unsure how much that will resonate with the students.

I always wonder if you took Professor $2M start up from Stanford and put them in my circumstances: almost no money, 3 years before they get one PhD student, sharing a single fumehood first few years in someone else’s lab cause it turned out no lab, if we’d find out how clever they really are.

For example if everything is in solution you don’t need a stir plate…and if it’s not all in solution and you don’t have a stir plate…you can get some exercise…

I got about $12k in US dollars…and everything costs way more down here so probably about $8k equivalent. Surprising what can be accomplished on a shoe string if you have to!

When my kid was 4, connecting from Qantas to WestJet…somehow booked onto the Temu North American buisness class for WestJet. ‘We have 3 seats toghether in coach, or you will have to all sit separately in buisness. I’ll go ahead and change that’ Me and wife, simultaneously: No!

The second crystal was not so good so had to find a way to kill a couple hours while it ran.

‘We’ve successfully embedded the lying machine into virtually every workflow. Information is now unreliable and we’ve even managed to ruin Google Search. What is the next phase in our plan to make everything worse?’ ’The chemistry journals table of contents pages. Destroy them.’

As Ingo Krossing said in a very amazing talk in Warsaw a few years back…it’s not that your chemistry doesn’t work, you just haven’t found the right conditions yet.

Get interesting result, write entire paper assuming everything will pan out perfectly, do experiments to complete already written story, edit as required as experiments do/do not work.

When I’m doing the individual meetings after a seminar my favourite it when the other person mentions a hobby. It could be anything…then I try and talk about that for 45 minutes instead of chemistry. Whittling bespoke checker pieces???tell me more.

The physics department where I went had what I’m sure was a non biased sign up…majors and success rates for Med School entry. Right at the top was math, then physics, chemistry was down a bit, some random humanities ones….and way down at the bottom all the biology majors were clustered.
