Horsegirl Friday: Up at dawn to ride Stella before the heat kills everyone. We did great- got her to lope & not quit, no leather slapping as I sat the canter almost perfectly, not a bad lesson. When I walked Ginger & Baby after, there was blood dripping from Baby's nose. They called the vet. #horses

Horsegirl Thursday: Foggy morning bliss, mucking stalls was easy with Kristin's help. Skye the pretty chestnut overo mare was moved to another stall so the loud machinery would not freak her out, as vans and tractors roared around getting all set up for the gala. Which will be 101 degrees. #horses

Horsegirl Sunday: Angie never showed so I just cleaned stalls and filled water buckets as usual. It was blessedly cloudy and lots of men were setting up heavy things for the big gala on Saturday, so there was a friendly all-hands-on-deck atmosphere. If only this were every day of my life. #horses

Horsegirl Saturday: Angie mentioned that I could ride her mare Cindy while she is recovering from surgery, so I signed a waiver and tomorrow she will show me her routine. Cindy is the very white roan in her early 20s so I am expecting a quiet ride. Then I mucked all the Therapy stalls. #horses

Horsegirl Friday: I rode Stella better than before, less leather slapping at the lope. Frankly she is hard to ride. Afterwards I showered her off since we were both dripping wet with sweat and then I walked Baby and Ginger. It was not cloudy enough since the lesson got delayed to 10. #horses

Driving back to California from Colorado, we spent the night in a resort hotel in flagstaff with a giant nature trail. Roz and I walked maybe half of it. Some guy reported a herd of elk but we missed that, dang it. #roadtrip

Believe it or not, Horsegirl Thursday: in between showers and squelching in the red mud, we went riding. I got the peppy pinto Arabian mare and practiced rein contact and perfect hands. It went well and I then helped feed the horses their supplement again. So thankful I borrowed boots. #horses

I learned recently about the Buddhist concept of renunciation and it chimes with thoughts I had been having for the last year. Giving up attachment to things and people you lose, but also your health or your self importance. I work in elder care so I see it a lot, but I struggle with loss. #deep

Horsegirl Monday: yes I rode a horse in Colorado this afternoon and it went well. The half Arabian mare was full of pep and had no problem trotting but she is used to English so I need to practice rein contact like a rubber band on her bit. Always learning something. #horses

HG Wednesday: Hot misery but we got 'er done. Already hot at sunrise, but I spent weeks bulling up to this tolerance so I pushed thru and w/ Blake's help we cleaned all stalls by 9:30. Indigo and Skye got showered off. That matcha protein shake was well earned & my heart is still recovering. #horses

HG Friday: I have to loosen my lower back more to ride Stella. This is the mare who makes riders better, because you have to use your A game to ride her trot & canter w/o bouncing. It's tricky since I have an old injury in my lumbar spine, but I am determined. 'Belly dancing' in the saddle. #horses

HG Wednesday: Exquisite 60 degrees @ sunrise, I had forgotten how delicious cool weather feels. Mucking & grooming on the farm was a breeze, & I took Taffy for a walk since her tummy was acting up. She was so much easier to lead than Sierra, what a contrast in pep, it was like walking a dog. #horses

Panting and worn out, soaked thru, I was at Ho Foods getting my protein shakes and the check out guy tried to make small talk. #horses

HG Thursday: 100% humidity and 80 degrees, but I pulled an extra shift at Therapy Stables and met Skye's owner. She is new to owning a horse so we had lots to discuss, and at one point she called me "super young" so my baseball cap is doing a good job hiding the greys. I was wiped out tired. #horses

HG Saturday: Heat stress has been building up, & I volunteer 3 mornings a week at Therapy Stables already, so I cancelled Friday's lesson. Once more today was wonderfully crowded w/ staff & clients doing #equine assisted therapy (more complex than it sounds) so I got to talk to Blake while mucking.

HG Tuesday: Once more into the breech, I rode Stick and we did all kinds of circles around obstacles at a trot. The trainer said she has never seen anyone ride like me, and that was not a compliment. Still working on my hands being low enough and not tilting up or down. At leastl I tried. #horses

HorseGirl Sunday: I did the thing. We are back up to 13 #horses and it takes longer but what would I rather be doing, sleeping in? I can't remember the last time I was able to sleep past 7 am. No lie, I was a night owl until 2021 when I got mono. Ask anyone.
