Smoke Moving Out of the Way as It Rises

Flamenco Sanchez owned a racehorse. The horse would die once a year by catching on fire and turning in bones & ashes before reappearing a week later good as new insight Flamenco's stable. Flamenco did not know what to do, whom to tell and trust with such a heavy secret. The horse loved to race locomotives and dream about his political ambitions. The horse once dreamt it was the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It stood like men stand for speeches. Rearing on its hind legs, ascending to 12 feet and to the awe of everyone who gathered to hear, but for all its climbing it was not granted words to move men. Its power remained in the realm of beasts, and so when it moved toward its calling to lead, it could only do as much through fear. Its wild stomps, its pained neighing drove everyone away from it, the upset and excitement forming first a matrix of crystals in its heart, then a palace to glow blue in sunlight and purple-gold in night. Only to awaken again to a wet slap of skin and muscle, the hardness of bone beneath.

therumpus.net/2026/04/09/p... I had a conversation with Jonah Mixon-Webster in March about his new collection Promise/Threat, out from Alfred A. Knopf. We talked about hopes, dreams, and the precarity of the imagination, among other things. You can read that conversation today at The Rumpus.

I have two poems in the new Waxwing. I so much love the art by Dora Ilce. I've included screens of one poem and of the issue art, but here's a link to the full issue: waxwingmag.org/index.php#top
A screen of Dora Ilce's piece entitled At the Party. It shows a fantastical animal creature in a bathroom sitting on a toilet reading a red book with a bottle of wine and a glass of wine.

The magic of oven cooking in conjunction with food ya hafta flip at half time. Ya grab the oven mitt and reach in to get the food and that wave of heat feels like it singes all the hair off yr arm but it remains there if ya have it in the first place and that's not even the half of what can happen.
