“white indigenous ways of knowing”, or, as I like to call it, “neo-Kantianism”

I agree. I meant dumb in a “not pursing Means conducive to Ends” way, but that’s Instrumental Reason for you I guess

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Granted. The interesting question is why they do it anyway. I don’t think “because they are dumb” is a sufficient answer, even if it’s true in a sense.

Not really. People line up outside of City Halls across the country to Say Shit about the Feds and/or far away things all the time.

I agree. Something to be said for authenticity/sincerity overpowering productive politicking, but I won’t go so far as to say this is A Problem—it’s a symptom of…something

People are lacking in feeling of agency and efficacy and that pent up energy has to go somewhere, given that Firebombing Walmarts isn't a great idea and Voting is only so often.

A colleague of mine said "voicing" is a better term than "protest." These people aren't doing this as a Means designed to bring about an End, exactly. It just strikes them as something that needs to be done almost as an End

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I wonder how many of these people would, if asked, say that they thought there was any chance whatsoever of their protest having a concrete effect. I would guess very few, yet they still think it is worth doing for some reason or another. Low sense of efficacy + High 'participation' is a puzzle.

I think there has been a shift (unsure if thats the right term) from thinking of protesting as something done to effect actual change on the state/society in a direct sense to it as a purely expressive act with the goal to simply put one's voice out there in the world. Cons likely outweigh pros here

This is only horseshoe theory if you think Cory Booker is on the far-left-flank of the Democratic Party, which is pretty straightforwardly not the case.

"It's not trans, it's just like if a boy was a girl instead, maybe even became a girl due to magic. Wouldn't that be so cool and hot? No I won't interrogate this further, why do you ask?"

Well sure, but some would argue that there are particular social arrangements that encourage rudeness and maybe those can be subject to criticism too. The moralizing objection is still available and not incompatible with what I said

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Fair enough. I don’t know the names nor precise arguments of the people you’re talking about specifically, but I think I agree with some version of both the statements you said so I was just trying to show how they work together for me.

I mean, it’s coherent if you hold the underlying belief that treating things which are not humans (or even living beings) in human ways is bad for our sociability. The prescription that follows is not “Be nicer to Alexa” it is “Alexa should not exist as a concept and it is bad that it does”

Fukuyama says he got it from Hegel but this is not true. Hegel’s Lectures on Philosophy of History do not contain this phrase nor this concept in a meaningful sense. It’s from Kojeve, whose reading of Hegel is idiosyncratic to the point he’s really just doing his own thing—which is fine.

To be fair to Habermas, he did in fact refuse to take Karp on as an advisee—he was a student of Karola Brede, about whom I know nothing. This is not true of Hans-Hermann Hoppe, the anarcho-feudalist who inspired Yarvin.

Maybe, if one considers Foucault to be a critical theorist. I think there is something fundamentally anti-social in Thrasymachus that I can't reconcile with a normatively meaningful critical theory.

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Many people, I think, find something initially compelling about Thrasymachus' anti-justice position. Most of us, however, grow out of this—even if Plato isn't the one to show the way out. These fuck, by contrast, have been one-shotted by the edgy teenager version of Nietzsche to all our detriment.

I mean, I have no issue if someone wants to contest whether Mamdani’s policies are good or bad for the city—reasonable people can disagree. What doesn’t make sense is the idea that Mamdani cannot be a democratic socialist because ~2 of his policies overlap with the GOP’s in the 60s
021
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Or, more generously, providing funding for public universities is DISqualifying for being a socialist? My argument is not that Rockefeller was a socialist, it is that this specific policy, couched in a vacuum, does not make-or-break someone’s ideology
010
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Is the argument here that socialism necessarily means government becomes more bureaucratic and burdensome—rationality of the policies be damned? I don’t see why sales tax, e.g., is incompatible with socialism.
110
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Yes, this makes sense. Only a Republican would levy taxes, so anyone who levies taxes must therefore be best described as a Republican. Similarly, only Republicans make changes to regulations or budgets. Anyone who does these things by definition cannot be socialist.

You are right that I don't have the best grasp on Israeli domestic politics. My understanding is that the Likud govt is generally not supported by Democrats and folks like Bennett represent a more palatable alternative to Bibi/BenGvir/Smotritch for Dems like Schumer. Maybe I should've said Lapid

I do not understand why you feel such a need to make this personally about me. At worst I am guilty of being an annoying nuance-demander (a famously liberal trait!). Your accusations and aspersions are offensive. Please recall that you are not immune to the effects of social media.

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I'll denounce that right now: It Is Bad. I have zero issue with liberal trans people, I do not understand why you think that I do. You talk about "my faction" as if you have any idea who I am—you don't, I am a random guy on BlueSky.
110
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I don't care for you personally identifying me with harassment and stalking campaigns with which I have nothing to do. Feel free to continue with an anti-popular front strategy. I prefer an alliance against fascism that includes liberals and leftists—broad groups which both contain things i find bad
110
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
No? I am happy to denounce these things, I am not a DSA member, those are bad. Let's recall the conceit of this thread, which was reminding people that liberals also punch left, not unlike how leftists punch liberals. Are they identical? No. I'd advise laying off the campism though, it is stifling

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Because AOC (and Mamdani) are easily the most popular and prominent DSA-affiliates. If you would like to say that the DSA should be excluded in toto, then I don't see how that wouldn't include them. I agree that the people who are DSA-only-not-Dem-too, such as they exist, aren't serious
110
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I mean yeah, the DSA is a terribly run and organized "organization" (in the national sense, some chapters—like NYDSA, of which AOC is a member—have their shit together more). I think few people would disagree with that, actually. You are the one who proposed the all-or-nothing blame binary
000
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I would lean strongly towards the "nothing" end of that. If AOC is beyond the pale for your political coalition, then I am not sure we have much in common.

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
You will not catch me defending the folks who harass you/Stancil/et al. Nor will Paul defend them, I suspect. Yet I remain a progressive who supports social democracy over austerity and a position on Palestine to the left of Naftali Bennett—which puts me on the left flank of the Democratic Party
200
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Sure, because those things happen in the newsrooms of the NYT and Atlantic not on discord because there are more adult liberals with actual power and institutional leverage than leftists in the narrow Hasan-Piker-Fan sense.

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Being a Liberal is fine! If I had to pick just one word for myself, it would be Liberal. But I would rather live in a political universe with coordinates of Liberal-SocDem-DemSoc than Liberal-Conservative-Fascist
000
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Perspective is important. It is fine to bash Hasan Piker or Stavros Halkias or whoever, but I think it is bad both strategically and normatively to try to excise "the Left" from the antifascist coalition in favor of liberals and the NYT/Atlantic clique
200
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Sure, but recall that you came into this thread saying that Paul Crider, editor of Liberal Currents, and I myself are the ones responsible for this and I simply do not think that is the case.
100
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I confess I don't keep up with internecine DSA nonsense, but afaik AOC is—in the real sense that matters—a member of DSA and has been since 2018. It seems like you are primarily talking about morons who are epiphenomenal politically and/or marginal in terms of power.
From wikipedia: The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are not a registered political party. Instead, they are a political organization for those with democratic socialist ideologies. AOC is a member of and is endorsed by New York City's DSA chapter.[1][2] AOC joined DSA in 2018. Due to a payment error, Ocasio-Cortez' membership lapsed in 2019. Neither DSA nor AOC noticed until 2026, when AOC rejoined.[

Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
If by DSA you don't include AOC and if by Uncommitted you don't include El-Sayed then I struggle to understand what we are talking about.
120
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I actually do not think you know who I am at all, I have done no such thing. I think it is possible (and good, even!) to have a Democratic Party that can include El-Sayed, AOC, and Stevens. I'd rather not have my coalition determined by negative polarization against Twitch streamers' endorsements.
140
Luke @dukeluke.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
To be clear, the faction in question here consists of Liberal Currents-type Smith-Douglass-Mill-Anderson liberals who endorse an anti-GOP popular front strategy?

So are there only innocent uses of clanker as a pejorative or are the uses in the video that this thread is about bad? It can't be both!

iirc Yamamoto though Japanese strategy was moronic and strongly opposed it in policy meetings since before the invasion of Manchuria. He agreed to carry it out, however, out of patriotic duty etc etc. He would most sympathize with technocratic members of JSOC who begrudgingly tolerate incompetence
