Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 03/10/2026Got my first speeding ticket in over 40 years >.< Road was clear and little traffic I was doing 78 in a 60, but the officer was super nice and wrote it as 65. When he asked why I was speeding, I just blurted out, “I wasn’t paying attention” Perhaps honesty paid? Could’ve been a whole lot worse 390

Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 22/09/2026Of course, I didn't read the fine print well enough >.< Was seeing folks posting about making reservations and got concerned I deleted the email during a hazy post-midnight run to a tree lol 020
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 22/09/2026Received the email from the con; still waiting for the hotel notice mentioned in that It's been a week now, shouldn't it have arrived by now? 200
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 15/09/2026Nice feature to look for should I end up replacing this 30+ y.o. Genie 100
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026Whatever happened, it seems to have been a one-off. Still, I've added "garage door develops free will" to the list of things the cameras are supposed to keep an eye on. 250
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026But electronics aren't infallible: a receiver/controller glitch, electrical transient, failing wall-control wiring, moisture, a flaky control board, or an extremely improbable radio/code event could conceivably generate an "open" command. 230
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026Or, somewhat more likely, the garage-door opener had a very rare electronic brain fart. I'm leaning toward a brain fart. Modern openers use encoded radio signals, so a random neighbor's remote shouldn't normally operate ours. 120
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026Nothing was missing, no interior camera showed anyone coming in, and there weren't even any suspicious noises. So apparently someone broke into our garage, carefully avoided every camera, stole absolutely nothing, made no noise whatsoever, and left without bothering to close the door. 120
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026Nobody appeared on any of the exterior cameras. All the remotes were safely put away. No power glitches. The only wall button is well beyond dog-operating height, and the dogs were behind a latched gate anyway. 120
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026We had a minor X-Files incident while we were away at the con. At some point, our garage door simply... opened. 🧵 560
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026I already have one. ~250TB of usable space. The collection has lots of duplicates or similar projects because I forgot I worked on things before. Yay ADHD. This classification project should help reduce the clutter a bit 010
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026It's fun rediscovering stuff I worked on in the 80s & 90s like my MPEG movie generator that used a random terrain generator to make a "view down" passing view portal or the XMODEM implementation I wrote in 6502 assembly to do file transfers from an Apple ][ to IBM PC XT 050
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 14/09/2026What do you do with 111,830 directories of source files accumulated since 1980? Why you write a "Source Archeology" app, of course. It's classifying all those into a database and where applicable, archiving the readme or markdown files found in each directory into a database for reference. 240
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 13/09/2026I always liked Seattle customs coming back to the US from Europe. They'd be nice, realizing you'd just endured hours of time zone changes, patiently ask for the docs, and not be rude. SFO and Chicago were horrible Hope your experience is not rude 🙂 211
Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 13/09/2026I remember taking that very ship in the 1960s and 1970s as we commuted between homes in Traverse City and Milwaukee. Had to look it up on Wikipedia to be sure, but I remember watching them load train car after car of coal and yelling at my brother for throwing coins in as they passed underneath 020

Duke Hyena @duke.hyena.zone · 09/09/2026I find it kind of boggling that space reporters are now calling it a “slow week” for launches because “there’s only one this week.” Apparently the chief space Nazi's greatest contribution to humanity was making launching a rocket into space seem disappointingly infrequent. 040
