Though the EHRC transphobic mess should be technically easier to fix than either our place in the EU or electoral reform.

I agree with your frustration, but Burnham talking about electoral change and EU re-membership (both forboden until very recently by Labour leadership) shows that these campaign groups can work (whether they end up achieving the ultimate goal is another question).

My concern is that the only part of the triple lock that needs binning is the "automatic 2.5%" (even when inflation / wages are below that). But that low inflation level isn't looking likely anytime soon, so financially this wouldn't be worth the political cost to removing the totemic protection.

David Duffield @duffster84.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Also, after the debacle of the Office for Students, what people want when they say "protect free speech" maybe quite complicated, and sometimes comes down to "in order to really protect my speech, you have to remove someone else's free speech".

I liked the first series, but stopped after the second as, like Orange is the New Black, the plot was “unrealistic scrap the characters get into… try to get out of… immediately rinse and repeat” which irked me. Loved the X-Files episode that inspired the character though.

The US school buses appear to also have stop signs (in the YouTube video you can see them) which you’d probably need to make it mandatory (we also don’t have distinct colours for school buses so it’s hard to actually know about the bus in front of you).

Lukewarm take: I feel a lot of pessimism about the present is built on not realizing just how bad the past was. Like if you just read a book about poverty in a first-world country in the 1950s it's staggeringly worse than now.

And when this happens we think this is a good thing? Sounds awful to me and not something an ethical campaign group would ever want to do themselves.

We would never let any other group continue to suffer in pain and horror UNTIL the right conditions are met (scores of messages and I’m not sure if a specific metric has been suggested by anyone). Why is it acceptable to do this to the dying?

Disabled people deserve better healthcare options on the NHS, but I believe it is immoral to deny dying people vital assisted dying treatment until disabled people are satisfied with the level of care in an ever more stretched NHS that needs more resourcing.

David Duffield @duffster84.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
But that’s not what’s happening? This isn’t even government policy (the wonks think that this would only pass with a government led Royal Commission). This is people needing this end of life treatment now.

It just sounds like dying people are the sacrifice (you are) willing to make to end capitalism. Why should they be denied their right to die safely and painlessly with heir family until *checks notes* the end of the capitalism. How can we treat the dying so cruelly as some political ping pong.

Yes, saw the same stat in Scott Bryan’s Guardian article about the early queer children’s TV show and it was shocking… but sadly not surprising.

David Duffield @duffster84.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
No it’s not. People have the right to ask to end their suffering for terminal illnesses, irrelevant of any other factor. Also, what is this magic metric or threshold that we must meet before dying suffering people are given the choice of their own lives? No one has been able to quantify it at all.

Both have bodily autonomy at their heart. Both have these ridiculous slippery slope analogies, both rely on people’s (often religious) belief that death is always the worst possible outcome.

Everyone should have the choice between palliative care or assisted dying, and removing the choice for those who want the latter until the former is (better? perfect? what is the metric here?) is absolutely leveraging them.
230
David Duffield @duffster84.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
No, you’re deliberately misrepresenting me. Palliative care doesn’t make a difference if someone lives or dies (it’s very important care). I’m saying it’s basically the same as assisted dying only the patient had the choice with the latter (instead of the arbitrary wishes of a doctor).
100
David Duffield @duffster84.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I consider these arguments abusive as they are using dying people’s pain as leverage to get improvements to systems that often won’t make much difference when the person is already dying (i.e. palliative care).
200
David Duffield @duffster84.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I’m sorry, this is such a nonsensical and abusive argument. It’s like denying the right to abortion until we defeat child poverty. Especially when palliative care and assisted dying are so similar (just you know the patient actually gets some agency in the latter).

Another massive disappointment by Parliament. I'm just grateful that (based on my current economics... god knows what the future holds), when the time comes, I'll likely have options that poorer families will not. Shameful.

I invited my (now) husband to live in my flat after 18 months together... absolutely no way I could have done that if marriage rights were automatically granted to him. Marriage is an active choice to enter into a legal framework.

To ensure that you get a choice over the rules (and restrictions) that will apply in the event of your relationship ending. The idea that someone who I cohabit with could end up having split access to my entire assets (after a week, month, year?) is crazy.
