For consistency’s sake, as I argued this for #BlueJays last year… It is wild to me that #MLB doesn’t seed based on records. Make it so winning your division gets you into the playoffs, sure. After that, the two highest records should get the bye and the third highest should play sixth. 1/2

I feel like it wasn’t so easy to see coming, given that most baseball writers and pundits had the Jays as a solid playoff team, and many had them picked as World Series bound once again. I think the reason this season has been so disappointing is precisely because it WASN’T easy to see it coming.

Agree with lightning in a bottle, but April was less about regression and more about injuries, as you do note. Disagree on the staff. Popkins wasn’t amazing last year and now terrible; the team was missing centre-of-the-order threats. This FO has been decent at assessing and gathering talent.

That’s exceedingly unlikely. The Royals are playing great baseball right now, but they have the 14th most difficult remaining schedule. The Jays have the 29th most difficult. Only Seattle has an easier finish than the Jays, and the Jays will still be five up on KC after tonight.

Nice article! I follow the approach you advocate for thanks to Strunk & White, but many style guides require dropping the “s” even in the singular. It makes no sense to me. As long as the usage is consistent, I can live with the nonsensical approach in a piece of writing.

So tired of #BlueJays fans talking about Vladdy like he is a terrible player. He is having a poor season. He has said as much. It happens. That’s baseball. He took the Jays to the World Series last year, and I have no doubt he will lead them to more playoff wins down the road. Hopefully, a Series.

Hoffman has a big contract and lost the closer role this year. I think Jays’ fans were unfair to him, and I am sorry to see him go. I figured he would go, but the Jays were never getting a haul for him.

One of my favourite SF novels is @greatdismal.bsky.social ‘s #Neuromancer. It is still the best of the best when it comes to cyberpunk, and would be on my Mount Rushmore of SF. Apple TV has been so good at adapting SF (e.g., Silo, Dark Matter), so I have high hopes for this adaptation.

As for Vladdy, this is a big outlier. His worst bWAR season before this one was 1.8, and the next worst (outside of 2020) was 4.0. So, normal is closer to 4.0 WAR than his current, which is below 1.

I am a #Nintendo guy, but I really got into #PlayStation starting with the PS3. I thought the PS4 was great, and the PS5, too. I won’t be getting a PS6. If I am going to be forced into a future where I can only get games digitally, I am not doing it on a console that will have one game store.
