Noticed an article on s&box from @gamingonlinux.com, so I decided to leave my opinion in the comments. My stance, in brief, is to stay the hell away from s&box. It's run by racists, and there's no reason to believe that Garry will do even the bare minimum necessary to keep a safe environment.

I've been making games on the s&box engine for three years.

My advice to any game devs considering using s&box is to stay the hell away.

Here are some facts:

In 2013, Garry Newman allowed links to CSAM to be posted on the General Disruption subforum of the Facepunch Forum. I've heard it said that the topic remained online for about a month, during which Garry would ban people demanding that he take it down. Even though this happened over a decade ago, it alone should be cause for concern when s&box is essentially a Roblox clone.

In 2019, Facepunch programmer Matt Stevens posted a video of the Christchurch NZ mosque shooting in the public-facing s&box Discord server. This resulted in Matt's Discord account being banned, and Garry shutting down that Discord server. Matt Stevens is still employed at Facepunch, and is the programming lead on s&box.

In an unaffiliated forum, I complained about the toxic atmosphere of the s&box developer community - not even knowing the previous two facts at the time - and Garry jumped in to insult me and defend the xenophobic comments of another one of his programmers, Layla.

Just this year, a well-known indie developer by the name of Kenney (of kenney.nl) tried to learn and promote the s&box game engine. Unfortunately, the s&box developer community run by Facepunch is extremely hostile, and in the new iteration of the s&box Discord server, Kenney was treated very rudely by Matt Stevens and Layla. Kenney no longer talks about s&box. This is only one of many examples of the toxic culture at Facepunch scaring off talent. I can think of several talented people who would have liked to make things for s&box but cannot stomach the hateful politics supported by Garry, the extreme unprofessionalism of his employees, and negligent moderation of his platforms.

Material Maker is very nice and easy to use. I've never made a PBR material from scratch before, but the nodes provided make it seem intuitive to start. Looking forward to authoring interesting-feeling textures with autistic precision. Gotta figure out UV mapping to a sphere (to avoid pinch) now.

Shoutouts to the time I was using an API that allowed indirect drawing with a vertex buffer but not an index buffer, so I rendered a tessellated plane as a line strip where vertices were stored in Hilbert order so I could use a space filling curve to pretend like I had a solid plane.
