What you'll notice right off the bat is that the move STARTS with something bad: you mark unrest, which in the language of the game, means this: It don't matter what you roll, you and your companions have seen you struggle, and that means everyone feel less confident in your abilities. ++

Unrest
Unrest is what eventually will destroy your group. When unrest is sown amongst your companions, log it on the group sheet. At 3, 9, 12 and 15 points of unrest, something bad happens; we call this an unrest milestone:

Spot on. Defy Danger has done some deep harm to the #PbtA design space. When I found myself needing something akin to Act Under Fire/Defy Danger for #ENTOMBED, I came up with this: ++

Make or Break
When you’re struggling to persevere over an overwhelming situation mark 1-unrest and
roll+Steel. On a 10+ you soldier on. On a 7-9 choose one:
◆ You’re disoriented, suffer a -2ongoing during this situation.
◆ You’re spooked and can’t support, help or lead any action until you get a breather.
◆ You cower until someone pulls you up. Ask who gets your back. You owe them now.
On a 12+, you come out stronger, mark advancement.

For #EBTOMBED I've put some work towards making sure "success" and "failure" are measured in places other than the result of a move, pushing those terms towards the group's subjectivity and away from hard dice.

When it’s time to make a move, roll 2d6 and add the numbers together, then add or subtract any modifiers to generate the final result.
- 6 or less is a miss. Things go badly, you don't get what you were after, and it gets worse. Check if the move has anything to say about that. In addition, the GM will play one of their own moves, as hard as they want.
- 7+ is a hit. A hit means you get your way. How much you get your way depends on if you got a strong hit or a weak hit.

- With strong hits (10+) things go your way, but going your way will depend on what move you're rolling: might be something definitive, or a step forward against a big challenge. But you can confidently say that you got what you rolled for.
- With weak hits (7-9) you mostly got there, but something's amiss; it either requires a sacrifice to be achieved, or pushes you forward while introducing some unexpected consequence. Most moves will say how you don't get all you want, but the GM might also sneak one of their soft moves in.
- Critical hits (12+) will give you an extra something, the move will say what. For all other intents and purposes, they count as a strong hit.
When you read a reference to just a hit, it means either weak, strong or critical, otherwise it’ll be specified.

Important thing to note. In Apocalypse World, a 7+ IS NOT A SUCCESS, it's "a hit". Which isn't a minor difference. You're not succeeding intent, you're hitting a move.

Great. So now, check the moves’ listings. Each move says which stat the player should add to its roll. To roll+a stat, the player rolls 2 dice, adds them, and adds the stat. If the sum total is 6 or less, that’s a miss. If it’s 7 or more, it’s a hit. 7–9 is a weak hit, 10+ is a strong hit.

I think my approach has more to do with an attitude towards dark fantasy, although there are named magic schools, thief's guilds & some other implied setting material sprinkled throughout. I do, however, have a sizable home setting, which might get published separately.

ENTOMBED is a fantasy adventure game set in a broken land of war, forsaken gods, dark magics
and cursed gold. Where monsters inhabit all corners of the earth, and inside the hearts of men.
Where blood is drawn over the squabbles of corrupt crowns, deeply held grudges, and the
stomach churning greed for treasures untold. A land where compassion is lacking and adventure
abounds.

A (mostly western medieval) fantasy setting is implied through playbooks, moves and
monsters, but there’s no lore set in stone, no encyclopedic description for every town, river and
rock, no canonical history of the world. ENTOMBED focuses on tone, and that’s what I'm going
to be talking about right now:

◆ Make the world dark, sorcerous and cursed.
Dark as in full of hidden and secret places to explore: the shadowy edges of a forest, the
dank depths of a cave, the forlorn ruins of a temple. Sorcerous as in full of witchcraft,
sinister wizards, and forbidden gods. And cursed as in on the verge of doom, besieged by
warring lords, dreadful monsters, and artifacts of black magic.
◆ Be the PC's groupie.
For all its grime and grittiness, ENTOMBED is not a defeatist game. Fantasy rockstars are
incredibly powerful, let them be powerful. Enjoy their shining moments of heroism in a land
sunk in darkness.
Being a groupie also means that you're invested in their struggles, their drama, their clashing
personalities and how they face overwhelming odds; they can't be victorious if they don't
face opposition. Think of it like this: you're setting up the stage—a grim land full of
danger—and they're playing the show. Enjoy the fireworks, get sad when they get sad, be
joyful when they get joyful, and play your part when they're itching for a fight. You win
when they win, and they win when everyone's excited about what their character is about to
do.
◆ Make larger-than-life NPCs, douse them in oil, and watch them burn.
NPCs are better when they're simple, cliché, and ready for trouble: the pleading villager's
life is tragic and miserable, the local baron is cruel and greedy, the dryad of the woods is
mysterious and wiley. This will entice the players to mess with them and, in true fantasy
rockstar fashion, make everything go up in flames with sorcery, swordplay and
skullduggery.
No NPC concept survives contact with the adventurers, so don't play safe, make them
memorable and explosive.
◆ Spit grime and grit.
The world is layered with the debris of ruined kingdoms and pulverized bone. Nothing is
unbroken or untouched, everything is tainted with the shadow of its opposite. Armies

Another thing that felt misplaced were the companions. Not only they read very Whedonesque, but the depth of their interaction was off: deeper than BG, but too shallow to explore during the length of the game. Simplifying don't work, because unlike BG1, you don't have 25 of them. They fell short.

PoE was promoted as a throwback to classic Infinity Engine #crpg s, measuring against the original Baldur's Gate games, Planescape: Torment & Icewind Dale. It's impossible not to compare it to those games. Aesthetically, it matches & surpasses them.

Finally finished Pillars of Eternity. Didn't like it, but I think it's worth the thought. This is my 4th try, I just kept bouncing off. I always liked the mechanics, but never stuck to the story. My logic was that with the new turn-based mode, I would extend the part I actually enjoyed: the combat.

I remember talking with an artist friend about it, not only it's a sex-objectifying visual product, but it is also *bad* at it: hastly plastering boobs at a picture. You could say the same of Boris Vallejo, Luis Royo, etc. but there was a level of effort this game doesn't even clear.
