Okay, I’ll say this much, the dreadful corporate slurry that is the Supergirl movie did at least prompt me to read the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which, in wildest contrast, was incredibly beautiful, timeless, and moving. So thanks, I guess?

I have a soft spot for this wobbly film. The novel is a grand guinol masterpiece, the ultimate f-u to fans; the movie tries to have its cake and eat it too, but it gets a few nasty giggles in. It’s more like a multimillion dollar Hammer Horror film than a proper thriller, and that’s just good fun.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot was all but dumped by Amazon in its release, but it’s a really beautifully done little picture by Gus Van Sant, with some killer performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill, not to mention maybe the best 20 seconds of Jack Blacks entire career.

The Magnetic Monster (1953) is the strangest penny-budget sci fi film I’ve ever seen: the script is weirdly hard-SF, and the production value jumps up by a 1000% in the last ten minutes due to being entirely constructed of parts from an earlier German sci-fi film. Sorta loved it, gotta say.
