“We're not quite back at the level of the 1950s, when cars would get completely new designs every single year“ Completely redesigned every year? That must’ve been wild for quality control.

The current Kia Sportage has only been on sale since 2022, and the next-generation model is almost ready to launch with an even wackier design.

The current hold time for Alaska Air is 2 hours and 5 minutes. I don't think there's any unusual situations going on right now. Is this the new normal?

Explaincars Drama: reminder that the threat levels range from 1-4 with 4 being the highest. The guidance for level 3 is “life-threatening behavior or display of a weapon”, so this is quite a serious and relatively rare occurrence, most of the disruptive passenger reports we see are level 1 or 2.

I guess it should not come as a surprise given that the UA flights from SFO to LHR that I was looking at recently were like 70% premium economy / business class seats, and 30% economy.

Dennis Cheung @dtc.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Alaska Air is introducing new planes with luxury lie-flat seats, but also without seatback screens (IFE) for economy seats - aka bring your iPad. This is quite the price segmentation-MAXxing for Alaska!

Unfortunately there's people sleeping at this station every day (all outdoors), and I regularly see drug use or its debris. There's also medical waste occasionally. So I'm pretty sure it's not animals. (Bit of trivia: This train station is a 20 minute walk to the birthplace of Silicon Valley)

Here's what the back of the Throne looks like when it's opened up. This one is at the Caltrain station (like LIRR) in Palo Alto, California.

The ones here also unlock if you have the keycard - I think it's meant for those who don't have a phone. The train station I commute to has a Throne, but there's still regularly human waste at the station. Given the other regular vandalism and destruction, maybe they've banned some people,

Dennis Cheung @dtc.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
We have these at some train stations here in California. You need an app or basic SMS capability. The point is that they can ban you if they determine that you wrecked the place. Which, unfortunately, has happened in our region in the past. Some required 24hr staffing.

When I was kid in the 1980s NYC, my dad's co-worker was mugged twice in the same day in the Lower East Side - near the Williamsburg Bridge. I know people bemoan gentrification, but I think on the whole less crime is better.

Unfortunately, now that I live in the San Francisco area, I’ve gotta say that there’s still many parts of SF that remind me a bit of the bad ol’ days of NYC - though not nearly as bad. I can’t even begin to describe what the Bowery used to be like.

This is too real about what happens in authentic old school Hong Kong restaurants. Locals make fun of how rude customer service is. Imagine the Seinfeld Soup Nazi, but more passive aggressive and faster.

People's houses are collapsing into the ocean. FEMA gives them no other option
Waterfront homes are collapsing along the coast. Homeowners generally have plenty of warning before their house buckles. So why aren't most houses removed, or at least emptied, before they fall?

From the historical photos I've seen, our region was actually pretty tree-less. Most of the trees were planted (and, more importantly, watered) by people. For sure the Australian eucalyptus trees in Belmont weren't there before people 🤣

The last owners of my house would be in their 100s now. I still get generic addressed mail that's clearly aimed at them. The ones that bug me the most are the ones that look like letters from the government, with fictional Department of titles - and then a tiny disclaimer inside.

IIRC, New Jersey was cited as the prime example of what not to do. This was back in 1999. Having done some quick web searches, it looks like this lesson was not learned in NJ.

By then I had lived in California for a little over a year, and I remember watching the TV at work: an army of doctors/nurses/students outside a hospital (St. Vincents?) waiting… waiting… waiting for victims to help. But that afternoon wave just never appeared. That image has stayed with me.

tldr: any attempt to prevent sand from eroding away from the beach via seawalls or artificial breakers means that you'll end up forever refilling the beach with sand ($$$), which if done wrong will only make waves pound the beach harder.

In college I took a course on Oceanography. It was surprisingly hard. But the one key memory I'll always have was the day the professor got super emotional when talking about erosion and exclaimed with religious fervor: Don't fight the ocean! You will not win! DON'T! DO! IT!
