The Cone Nebula (NGC 2264), in false (dynamic narrowband) color -- from my backyard. 11" reflecting telescope, 19hrs total exposure. 2700 light-years away, about 7 lights years tall. Full resolution: app.astrobin.com/i/a3fcc3 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cone_Ne... #astrophotography #astronomy
Bright red-orange-yellow swirl of nebulous clouds surrounding a cone-shaped dark shadow pointing upwards, surrounded by blue and orange stars, fading to a pale green-blue background at the edges of the frame.

The Crab Nebula (Messier 1), in natural color. From a supernova ~1000 yrs ago -- now from my backyard a year ago, just processed this year. 11" reflecting telescope, 2hr exposure. Full resolution: www.astrobin.com/4objt7/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crab_Ne... #astrophotography #astronomy
A bright space nebula shaped like the shell of a crab dominating the center, surrounded by many stars on the black background. The nebula is an intricate spidery web of pale pink, magenta, and blue, over a white cloudy shape of the crab shell.

The Cygnus Wall, the "west coast" part of the North American nebula, in high resolution dynamic narrowband SHO. From backyard last summer, processed this month. 3-panel mosaic, 13hrs/panel. www.astrobin.com/kfk8rv/ Zoom: zoomhub.net/PV2DO (10MB, 7142 x 3916 px) #astrophotography #astronomy
Astrophotograph. Predominantly blue nebula fills the wide-angle 16:9 ratio frame, superimposed with a strong bird wing-like red-orange-yellow shape delineating the so-called "wall". Peppered with tiny stars.

The Jellyfish Nebula in high resolution dynamic SHO, from our backyard. 2x mosaic, 25hr/panel. www.astrobin.com/bb14dm/ Zoom: zoomhub.net/3p911 (21MB, 8980x7338 px) Fun: zoomhub.net/YV1NL - 2x w/Topaz Gigapixel AI, some artifacts, not bad! (158MB, 17960x14676 px) #astrophotography #astronomy
Astrophotograph. Predominantly orange and blue jellyfish-shaped nebula fills the frame, with an intricate tangle of nebulosity throughout. A large bright orange star called Propus is at the bottom center.

#6 A final "fairy-on-top" out-of-this-world Christmas bauble, backyard galaxies: The famous Andromeda Galaxy (M31). A neighbor to us, it's over 6 full-moon-widths wide -- if your eyes were as sensitive as an astro camera. The full zoomable experience: zoomhub.net/89VNW Happy Holidays! 🔭🎄
Astrophotograph. Very large bright gold oval spiral of distant stars in the center. Faintly blue arms at the extremities, flecked with red-magenta hydrogen clouds. Background is black, speckled with multicolored stars. Two small white ovals are superimposed, the smaller being the M32 satellite galaxy and the larger the M110 satellite galaxy.

#5 Last (maybe) out-of-this-world Christmas bauble, backyard galaxy photos: The Triangulum Galaxy (M33). One of our nearest neighbors, it's over two full-moon-widths wide -- if your eyes were as sensitive as an astro camera. The full zoomable experience: zoomhub.net/w29gJ Happy Holidays! 🔭🎄
Astrophotograph. Very large bright spiral of stars in the center. Faintly blue arms, speckled with both magenta hydrogen clouds and green-blue oxygen clouds. Zoomed-in, many stars are visible in the galaxy itself. Background is black, speckled with multicolored stars. Some tiny specks of other distant galaxies are sprinkled amongst the stars.

#4 BONUS out-of-this-world Christmas baubles, backyard galaxy photos: 3 at once! Hidden (IC342), Fireworks (NGC6946), and Phantom (M74). All face-on spirals. Happy Holidays! 🔭🎄 www.astrobin.com/full/cpl6bd/0/ www.astrobin.com/full/1dbkn5/0/ www.astrobin.com/full/8po8kk/B/

#3 out-of-this-world bauble from this year's backyard galaxy photos: the Outer Limits Galaxy, NGC891 in Andromeda. The name is from the 1963 US TV show -- first in a series shown in the closing titles. Happy Holidays! 🔭🎄 www.astrobin.com/full/bkcjbe/C/
Astrophotograph. Bright golden sliver at an angle across the center, slightly bulging in the middle, with a prominent jagged frilly black line all through the longer axis. Background is black, speckled with multicolored stars. A tiny misshapen spiral second galaxy is just visible top right.

Another out-of-this-world bauble from this year's backyard galaxy photos: the Sunflower Galaxy, M63 in Canes Venatici (just "under" the Big Dipper). The archetypal "flocculent" (flaky) type. The small bits echo seeds in a sunflower head. Happy Holidays! 🔭🎄 www.astrobin.com/full/645sif/0/
Astrophotograph. Large oval galaxy in the center is mottled bluish with lots of swirly detail and pinkish specks. The core is brighter and yellowish. Background is black, speckled with multicolored stars.

Deck the halls with… Out-of-this-world baubles! Sharing some backyard galaxy photos I've taken this year. First, the Fiddlehead Galaxy, NGC772. A "peculiar", it's a distorted shape compared to the more usual symmetrical ones. Happy Holidays! 🔭🎄 www.astrobin.com/full/6p6gwz/0/
Astrophotograph. Galaxy in the center is bluish with lots of swirly detail. Shape of a fiddlehead like on a fern, or a teardrop. Background is black, speckled with multicolored stars.
