Funny enough, I never posted this publicly, but I actually did my own resprite of the Agent Violet character from the web comic. A human secret agent in the Mario universe is a cool idea, and I genuinely think it can work with the right amount of effort.

As one of the people who gave Asylus feedback for the recent reboot, I think HoTS’s story has a lot of potential to go somewhere good. He just needs the right people to steer him in the right direction, learn when to tell him no, and offer something that both he and the fans would really like.

The only odd spot I won’t argue is regarding the whole giant battle thing, because the Mario series does have a history with epic giant sized battles. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to see the P balloon used in anything comedic (nor accurately), rather borderline uncomfortable.

I’m just not very comfortable with that kinda stuff. Especially with the way it’s used nowadays. Plus, Heroes of the Stars had a similar issue with the web comic continuation making some extremely ‘strange & questionable choices’, forgetting that there were still kids following the series too.

I recall the early episodes being very fun & interesting in concept, lost track of the series for years, then rediscovered it again because of some fetish thumbnails. Despite that putting me off, I still thought the concept of the Mask ending up in Mario & Luigi’s universe was awesome & hilarious.

But yeah, I don’t fully disagree with the quoted post, but from what I’ve personally seen in over a decade, I can’t fully agree with it either. I think rose tinted glasses and desensitization definitely plays a big role in people missing the past, and seeing those issues as lesser compared to now.

Looking back to my old G+ days, I know for a fact fandoms were always rancid. But I do hold the sentiment that Covid era definitely intensified a number of problems when it came to glorifying ‘standom’, hypocritical views on what’s ‘parasocial’ and what isn’t, and more.

I can’t say that sprite work is easy to get into, different strokes for different folks, but it doesn’t take a degree or mad graphic design tools to get a sprite from TSR, edit it in paint, slap it on your thumbnail, and call it a day. Way more admirable, and at least you can say YOU did it.

Stuff like this just pisses me off to no end. Something that separates sprite work from traditional artwork is that a lot of these materials are worked on, shared by, and used by the community for their use projects as they see fit.

Found some BS on my YT feed. Surely commissioning an actual spriter, or using a screenshot from the game wouldn’t have been much more difficult than resorting to AI slop? Even editing a beard onto the pre-existing sprite with no other change whatsoever would’ve been preferable over this, man.

There’s some cases where I wouldn’t mind cutting corners and reusing pre-existing assets, if see fit, but for the most part I think my biggest struggle is paneling and dialogue boxes. I have Aseprite, so I can probably mess around with editing effects. I’m still kinda getting used it.

Here’s the other thing; there is so much more I really want to do outside of the usual grain for a sprite comic/series. It’s one of the reasons why I’ve been pushing myself to finish personal projects, and creating custom environments. I’d like to set up my own take on the world to go with the cast.

Two of the things I’ve always wanted to do: •Make my first rom hack (preferably a FRLG hack). •Start and finish my own sprite comic series. I’ve come to accept that the first one will probably never be doable, but I really do wish I can figure a way to do the second thing. I have so many ideas.

Still upset that not only AI ruins everything it touches, it has also invaded niches I enjoyed. Elaborate rom hacks and homebrew ideas that used to be made out of skill and passion are now invaded by AI bros doing it as shittily as possible. I'm just constantly going "is this AI" every time now.

I really don’t miss doing these morning shifts. I make my best effort to go to bed early, and there’s always a 6.5/10 chance I wake up in the middle of the night with some problem, struggle to go back to sleep, then as soon as I do the damn alarm goes off.
