Who wants to be located downtown in Whiterun? The cloud district is what you want to be next to, but I guess you don’t get there very often

From what I've seen of Spain on bluesky, they skew pretty normielib/leftwing (and UK bsky of course is pretty leftwing as well).

Wonderful thread! With EVs, we've been seeing a massive takeoff in developing markets (eg South Africa, Brazil, Nepal, Ethiopia) – is there any evidence of V2G being used for battery storage in them yet?

Yeah but I think his point is more that outside some cities/towns, control was effectively delegated to local rulers. When Britain, Germany and France dismembered the Sokoto Caliphate they left emirs in control in the interior, for example

Russia is already basically an economic puppet for China. Since Russia got somewhat cut off from Europe they’re basically a captive supplier and easy consumer for China

I think the Chinese car ban debate is the real test here, and Slotkin shilling so hard for it keeps me worried. If that dies an ignominious death, I feel a lot better about trade. Letting chinese cars into the US is the easiest way to generate a visible consumer surplus from free trade

Oman/Zanzibar de facto controlled the eastern half of the Congo via Tippu Tip at the same time. That said, failure to effectively control Sudan is one of the main factors that leads to Britain getting influence in Egypt, so it probably wouldn't be easy.

Who needs expertise when you have the avatar of masculinity in Scott Bessent who is willing to get into fistfights with any official, elected or otherwise? Do you really think the markets could win a fistfight with a spry 64 year old?

It's concentrated in metro NY and spills over into NJ; I think general machine dysfunction is the underlying cause here, so it's the center collapsing to attacks from both left (Kim, Zohran, AOC) and right. Sherrill in NJ was also a massive poll overperformance last year.

Really strongly recommend “Islamic Enlightenment” on the topic which does a lot of compare-and-contrast with the Persians and Ottomans of the same era

And they’re making a pretty credible push towards modernization! Huge amount of progress catching Egypt up on science, medicine, and even industrialization, then becoming a major cotton producer in the American civil war.

So I think there’s a kernel of truth in there (“I’m bad at math” being treated as an immutable characteristic, for example), but effectively the entire mythology of America is built on grindset. Even Michael Jordan’s persona is built on idea of working around the clock to get better

Once East-West is attacked once, I'd assume that's the real pricing mechanism, isn't it? I feel like the question is less "is a 1,200 KM pipeline vulnerable to being blown up" and more "is the enemy considering that a valid target" and the first bombing already answered that question

What’s kind of fascinating is that there’s some countries with traditional “machismo” issues that are taking up EVs in droves (Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic), and even neighboring Ukraine hit 50% in December

DSB @dsb000.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
So I think the question becomes, what are the things democrats can do in 2029-32 that will be sufficient wins to offset this? France, Latam, and Korea don’t seem to have answers. The IRA didn’t prevent this, locking them up isn’t working in Brazil/Korea, and killing data centers won’t work either.

House reps could get bonuses every reelection equivalent to $1 per vote margin. They can’t determine their own districts so hopefully that incentivizes both high turnout AND high popularity, and “$1 in tax if you think your rep is doing a good job” isn’t a crazy sell

And at the same time, it provides an interesting villain and counterfactual. “What if the Whites won the Russian Civil War” isn’t exciting because we already have 500 years of history of that in Russia. “What if a slave empire won the American Civil War” vs “America stays British, like Canada”

There is no country on earth that loves petrochemicals like Japan. The petrostates of the world did not choose their love of oil: Japan, despite having none, has built their entire economy around petroleum products and refuses to change even when it would save their economy trillions of dollars

This is close enough to where there’s an incentive to really push some buttons, though. If you’re BMW with their large plant there, you start asking Graham some *very* tough questions about tariffs and trade wars, for instance.

I think my worry is just that it's really hard to electrify when Big 3 (and Honda) aren't taking electrification seriously, and higher gas prices have been driving people to Asian hybrids so far, not EVs. We'll see, but policy+OEM headwinds look really tough here

I felt like this in H1, but July and August were just really bad and reversed the recovery that we saw in the beginning of the year. There's been bad rumblings about Ford's new EV pickup so I'm pretty worried about a healthy turnaround in 2027

Was the death star a public-private joint venture? Did it issue stock/bonds? Was there a hedge fund who made bank by predicting that it was going to be a disaster and shorting the bonds? Does the Star Wars galaxy have more complex forms of credit that we haven't invented yet?

Andor established that the Death Star’s front was a much-needed energy program, so Luke probably crashed the Coruscant stock market and triggered an energy prices shock as producers and buyers calibrated to a new expected equilibrium
