Checking in a few days later to say that the Texas social studies standards revision has been the disaster anyone could have expected. Round up of coverage below: www.dallasnews.com/news/educati... www.houstonchronicle.com/projects/202... www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...

They have finally gotten to public testimony on Item #2, which is the social studies TEKS. You can rest assured that this will stretch for quite a few hours yet.

Still on Item #1, still taking testimony. Whew. The SBOE may get to the social studies TEKS today, but I will not be with them. Life carries on. I'll report back tomorrow on whatever they pass in the dark of night tonight.

Checking in and yes, we're still on testimony - not SBOE debate - on Item #1. Long, long week ahead for the people in that room and Texans who are bracing for whatever's about to come out of this elected body.

Currently, a teacher is testifying on the literary list, and is talking about how teacher retention is abysmal* and that she is not comfortable pushing Christianity on her students. *Feature, not a bug.

But we can celebrate that people are still showing up and making thundering arguments for sensible, rational, and effective education. If you're reading this and you've testified in Texas or in other hostile environments to speak up for good education, you have my thanks and admiration.

And I must emphasize: they are doing this to their constituents. They are actively making a calculation that whatever happens here, it will not affect their electoral career. This decidedly does not look like a healthy democracy.

The degree to which Pickren and Hall, specifically, have whipped up racism & Islamophobia in this process, to the point that kids and moms in hijabs are being threatened by big men in the lobby before they testified (which happened last time, several times) is frightening.

Several board members are consistently hostile, mean, and condescending, sometimes badgering anyone who disagrees with them. It takes a lot of bravery to stand up for your ideals to folks who have made clear that if you were drowning, they would debate between throwing you a lifesaver or a rock.

There's just no other state I've ever seen where there's this kind of national identity at the state level.

Listening to someone argue that there needs to be more Texas history. Texans' opinion of Texas has thoroughly elevated it to nation status. The allegiance people voice is to Texas first, then to the United States - and how Texas, specifically, should interpret its founding documents.

Checking in and, as expected, we're still talking the literary list. Did hear a Jewish testifier argue with Brandon Hall about why the translation of the text matters. Hall was proudly sticking up for Christian interpretations of Jewish scripture and the superlative nature of the King James version.

I'm having to do multiple things at once, so I won't be covering in the detail I've done previously. I will check in with highlights as this meeting drags on. Today is just the first day. Marathon, not a sprint.

It's going to be a very, very long week. You can follow along here. Over two hours in, and it appears they are still debating the first item, which is the equally controversial literary list, which is as ideological as the social studies revision. www.adminmonitor.com/tx/tea/commi...

Good morning, all. I'm back! Starting late for the blockbuster Texas SBOE meeting, during which we can expect the large majority of the board to continue jamming their enormous, costly, ill-advised, slapdash, Christian Nationalist social studies standards revision for 5.5 million kids in Texas.

The AHA has released a statement opposing the new Texas Tech University Course Content Guidelines, which prohibit content related to sexual orientation & gender identity in undergraduate courses, without defining these terms. Students deserve full and accurate histories. Read the statement:

WOW, just in: TX SBOE Dem members' press release. 👀 "Until these concerns are fully addressed, we urge the [SBOE] to pause further action on the Social Studies TEKS Review." I mean, there are a 1000 reasons why this revision should stop, but, gotta say, this is one of the more compelling ones.

I am very worn out and also have other work to do, so I can't make any promises about updates on the SBOE meeting today. Depending on what emerges out of the morass, it may be worth it for me to go back and watch video. Will keep y'all apprised.

Good morning, everyone. The Board will take up social studies standards again today. Here's yesterday's coverage. The details get fuzzier towards the end because I was so tired, sorry. I can't vouch for how coherent it is, since the Board adjourned around 1:20 AM CT. Threads below:

My review of the day: Some bright spots of hopeful and passionate democratic participation, but on the whole awful and deeply disturbing.

And we're adjourned just after 1:20 AM CT.

CAs will come back tomorrow (later today), but Leyva will be gone. Shame to lose her honesty. This whole thing is murky and ominous, and it was nice to get what felt like a real answer, given in a very scary room.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Hickman asking questions of CAs. You were listening today, do you have any further amendments based on what you heard in testimony? They have nothing to offer, really. That's quite remarkable considering the variety of things we heard today.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Apologies, Clark is there. I didn't hear her. I assume she voted against.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
So the content advisor draft has formally been adopted as an amendment. The CA draft is the base draft now.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Now voting on the amendment. Roll-call. Reveles - No Francis - Yes MPD - No Childs - No Hickman - Yes Pickren - Yes Young - Yes Ellis - Yes Maynard -Yes Hall - Yes Clark - Absent Little - Absent Brooks - Abstain
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Reveles - No Francis - Present MPD - No Bell Metereau - Absent Hickman - Abstain Pickren - Yes Young - Yes Ellis - Yes Maynard - Yes Hall - Yes Little - Absent Clark - Absent Brooks - Abstain Well, that's quite a vote. 5-4, motion carries.

Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Ellis throwing up a point of inquiry. When will we get back to this tomorrow? Kinsey: No earlier than 11. Childs called for a roll call vote on the procedural vote.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Frazier's got a bit of a bad attitude tonight.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
So now we're back to adopting the content advisor copy as the amendment. This will become the base document to for future amendments. Hickman: Will the CAs be here after this vote? Kinsey is not advised.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
More procedural talk. It's all actually important, but it is way too late for me to try and translate it all.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Kinsey gives his long interpretation, even though Reveles was asking legal specifically. Reveles: I don't think the consensus document meets the criteria for posting. Hickman calls a point of order to return to the vote, so now they've suspended the rules.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Lawyer says it's within parameters. Reveles asking what specifically those parameters are. Are we supposed to put all content in one place, given that "this was in pieces everywhere" on the website? Does that meet our requirement for public notice? Kinsey: "Yes." Reveles: Legal?
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Having to consult legal because "Open Meetings Act" was said. Too technical for me to follow. MPD is asking a very good question about whether this can be voted on if the public hasn't seen it. Really digging in.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Maynard asking for a consultation on parliamentary procedure to keep this from being drawn out. I think they want to vote to amend and then debate it. MPD is making sure she understands. I barely have a clue.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Frazier is trying to defend the change as something with an "people are unfair to people." We don't want to inject race into that. Childs isn't having it. "It's based on race. It's not arbitrary!"
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Childs focusing on some statements and asking about how they to statements about slavery "not always being race-based" in a section on the Civil War. Childs showing some early morning vigor. She's in her zone, I think.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Reveles calls a point of order on Hall and stops him again. Most aggressive move we've seen going the opposite direction today.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Hall: There wasn't a final vote? Leyva: No. Hutchison: We had a "can we live with it" vote at the end (?). That sounds like . . . not a consensus.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Hall asking Leyva for her individual recommendations. She said that she consistently did that. Hall starting to ask about process, Reveles is calling point of orders on him because he's asking about process. Successfully derailed Hall, who is trying to ask a different question now.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
MPD finally gets the question out. How did the documents evolve. Koons says, "Oh, there was only one 6-3 vote." Leyva says no, that's not true.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
MPD saying she's been asking who was writing the TEKS. Point of orders all over. MPD fighting for her life to get to the bottom of this without being told she's asking about process not content. Really brutal shutdowns.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
MPD gave Leyva the floor. She's reporting a very different experience of the content advisors than has been portrayed. This wasn't run by consensus, and at one point the first document we worked on were Frazier's, not the Work Group B product.
110
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
So the board is supposed to vote on the content advisor draft with nothing but this "Oh, you know, we took out a little of this, a little of that" walkthrough? "Good enough for government work," I guess?
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Frazier says we barely did anything to the document. There aren't real changes here. There were a lot of contributions that Hutchison made. Hutchison: I submitted to elementary ones. A lot of minor tweaks.
100
Whit @drwhit.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
Reveles upset that this isn't doing right by kids and educators. Maynard calls for a CA walkthrough. Calls for a CA "spokesperson" to come up. They have never elected anyone of them leader or spokesperson. Frazier drags his feet just a bit to jump to the cause. He's never hesitated previously.
