That’s your argument? *You* liked it? Have you ever considered that you may be a narcissist?

2/ Most psychologists and therapists can tell you that conceding to narcissists’ demands will make things worse in the long run. If we give up the four months’ standard time we currently have, we will never get any of it back.

1/What arguments do you see from them? They’re narcissists! *They* want more afternoon an evening daylight. They “don’t care” what happens in the morning (as at least one person in this thread has already explicitly said.

Do you have any narcissists in your family or close professional circles?

2/ Keeping the twice-yearly clock change should be the lesser evil for those who support permanent standard time. Permanent DST means caving in to the narcissists. As it is, we only have four months of standard time a year. In no way should giving up even that pittance be considered acceptable.

1/ I see the DST debate as genuinely emblematic of life in Trump’s USA. Fully 85% of the “arguments” we see in favor of permanent DST reek of ignorance, narcissism, naive realism, and an outright lack of empathy. Permanent DST should not be regarded as a lesser evil for supporters of standard time.

Your most effective comeback would have been to say that I support Tom Cotton. Instead, you chose to defend Trump on this issue. That’s interesting.

If you support permanent DST, you support Donald Trump. If you’re uncomfortable with that, perhaps you need to rethink your position.

I support permanent standard time. But I hate the idea of permanent DST so much that I’d rather keep switching the clocks than do that.

As long as it happens . . . one way or the other. And no, I’m not one of those people. But it would shock me if one or more of them aren’t itching for revenge.

Maybe so that the NCTE higher-ups would have to answer questions in court that they’ve refused to answer outside of court?

Outside of “Barely Breathing,” I was essentially unfamiliar with Duncan Sheik’s work. But I’ve always remembered the opening line of a magazine article I read at least twenty years ago: “Duncan Sheik majored in semiotics.” RIP

I believe that key elements of both the anti- and pro-AI positions highlight how utterly clueless most people are about what writing is and how it works.

Rule change suggestion for the NFL: pass interference on a play where the ball is underthrown is a five yard penalty with no automatic first down.

2/ My department currently has half the number of full time professors it had when I started here more than 25 years ago. State appropriations per FTE have dropped by 40% since 2000. We have more students than there are people teach them. This is not a crisis of enrollment.

1/ Where I work, we just finished the first week of the semester. All of my classes are full or over-full with waiting lists. Every day, I get emails from students begging me to give them overrides because they don’t have enough credits to be full-time students.

Currently, between 61 and 62% of US high school grads go directly to a college or university. If you think 50% of grads would be better off in trade schools, which specific ones have made the wrong choice to go to college? And on what basis do you pass that judgement on them?

Tim Mayers @drtrmayers.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

So is it your behavioral science expertise that entitles you to declare that 50% of university students would be better off in trade schools? Shouldn’t they have some choice in the matter?

If you don’t know what Market Fundamentalism is, you could . . . I don’t know, do some research. And no, I’m not implying anything remotely like you claim I am, because I’m capable of thinking about human activity is something other than purely economic terms.

You appear to be so enmeshed in the theology of Market Fundamentalism that you can’t think sensibly about higher education. Why would anyone want to reduce the number of universities by half? So that we can build more prisons—which are far more expensive?

Even in states with Democratic governors, the situation has been dire for years. Most Dem elected officials simply don’t give a shit . . . at least not enough to do anything about it.

I’d bet that many of the people raising allegedly sincere concerns about the DSA platform are the same ones who brushed off (or laughed off) concerns about Project 2025 during the 2024 presidential election.

If Dr. Fauci will plead the Fifth in response to every question he’s asked today, one of the Dem Senators should ask: “Dr. Fauci, during any of President Trump’s COVID press conferences, based on what you smelled and heard, do you believe he shit his pants on stage.”

We might not ordinarily think of notebooks as technology, but this book vividly illustrates how, for centuries, they have been actively enabling key developments in human thinking and human activities.

Without CCCC (the organization *and* the annual conference) I would never have had an academic career (or at least not one remotely like the one I’ve had). This is a nightmare scenario.

What’s fascinating to me about yacht rock is how so many of the bands and figures associated with it worked in other, very different genres also: hard rock, prog, smooth jazz, country, folk, etc.

I feel so enlightened to learn that far too many of us have reacted to the right’s “dangerous anti-intellectualism” by creating an uncritical fan cult around people who actually know what they’re talking and writing about. (Seriously, WTF?)

I’ve seen that claim too. To be honest, I think the U.S. being disqualified because Trump interfered would be the best outcome in an all-around horrible situation. Trump taking all the blame for screwing up a chance for the US to advance in the World Cup would be fitting.

The post I was responding to was vague enough that it was unclear if the poster meant Balogun should choose not to take the field or Pochetino should keep the whole team off the field. The latter would be an automatic forfeit. Pronouns must have clear antecedents.

Tim Mayers @drtrmayers.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
Ridiculous. They could simply put Balogun on the bench and leave him there. Forfeiting the match would be stupid.

Tim Mayers @drtrmayers.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
I agree that Trump has utterly tainted this next game, no matter what. However, I also think Belgium look horribly petty complaining about this. Balogun’s red card was a very lucky break for them, happening in a game they didn’t even participate in.

Tim Mayers @drtrmayers.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
There’s also an exception for Lionel Messi—but that one also involves the red card never being shown in the first place.

Not only bulletin board material. Now they look like they’re upset that they lost a lucky break they caught with the questionable and controversial red card call in a game they did not participate in.
