Occasionally I think of writing a piece titled 'Fuck Critique', but beyond all the other caveats on using the word, it sounds like a self-undermining critique of critique.

If Kieran Healy can title a piece 'Fuck Nuance', to add to low hanging fruit like 'Fuck neo-liberalism', then, of course you fucking can.

A few weeks ago, @wellcometrust.bsky.social announced that scholars in the republic of Ireland would no longer be eligible to lead bids to the flagship discovery research scheme. We think this decision is badly flawed, and are asking them to rethink: www.irishhumanities.ie/assets/PDFs/...

I think its commonplace but cloaked. Phrases like 'Lest there be any confusion...' or 'For clarity...' or 'Let me be clear from the outset...' signal to me that the reviewers are being subtly toasted.

And those university administrators must have their voice heard too, right? Otherwise they'd be silenced and marginalised! But a serious question; are they bedazzled or do they really believe in this stuff?

Save it til you visit Paris with the kids: 'This is where Michel went to school' - 'This is where Michel taught' - 'This is where Michel died' <Cue: floods of tears from children, who presumed he was a distant family friend, since he is mentioned more frequently than most relations>(in my house too)

Panics over youth unemployment generally presage harsher forms of welfare conditionality. The 'flagship" Get Britain Working policy promises a new Youth Guarantee, and prescribes work as the remedy to ill health (even if work often actually causes ill-health).

A pal calls this 'thin slicing', as though academic research was a sausage, or maybe a cake. There's a pragmatic balance to be struck tho: What is 'decent quality research' - how many papers to do, etc. The real problem is that it pays to maximise output (publishing) and minimise inputs (research)

In fairness, they did have a bit at the weekend on the 'affinity diaspora', a blathery word which here means 'neither of the two typical stereotypes' from Sean's article - which are ubiquitous. But still - why do these stories automatically register as 'interesting'?
