"When Republican presidents take a beating in the midterms, Cabinet changes can come the next day," @drtedj.bsky.social writes. "This year, signs point to another potential blue wave, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth seems the prime candidate for a pink slip."

When Republican presidents take a beating in the midterms, someone gets fired the next morning. In 2006, Bush fired SecDef Rumsfeld. In 2018, Trump fired AG Jeff Sessions. This year? Hegseth seems the prime candidate for a pink slip; then the clean up can begin www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Trump’s $5,000 "dividend" is a gimmick that reveals his theory of the presidency in his lame-duck years: only turnout matters, clientelism reigns supreme, and every buck will be passed. It’s a typical Trump promise: costs nothing to make and has little to no chance of delivery. wapo.st/3TtwRlA (🎁)

South Carolina will hold the party’s first presidential primary in 2028, Theodore R. Johnson writes. “By going to South Carolina first, the party is declaring that pragmatism is its electoral and governing philosophy.”

Opinion | Can South Carolina deliver the White House? The DNC’s big 2028 gamble.
The new primary calendar for Democrats prioritizes pragmatism over progressive ideals.

At first glance, primaries in Michigan & Florida suggest expanding party tents. A closer look confirms a feature of our politics: Republicans have consolidated their gatekeeping, Democrats have lost the handle on theirs; the result for both, paradoxically, is more diverse leadership. wapo.st/45Kr8dM

And last, even if more progressive candidates lose the Black primary vote, Black voters will support the Dem nominee in the general by wide margins. See Mamdani, who lost Black voters to Bloomberg in the primary & won them convincingly in the general. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan can expect the same.

The 2028 primary opens in SC, where Black voters are older, more moderate, pragmatic, and numerous. If you can’t win the South, you’ll have to get the nom via a different coalition.

Theodore R. Johnson @drtedj.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
3) any progressive/dem socialist candidates who want to be president must win Black voters in the South, where they are the majority/supermajority in Dem primaries. The last three Dem presidents can thank SC & Super Tuesday Black voters for the momentum swing that carried them to the White House

Theodore R. Johnson @drtedj.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
2) Descriptive representation still matters. Black candidates - democratic socialists or otherwise - still do better with Black voters than others. And like many others, these primary voters decide on the candidate more than the party platform. See DC mayoral, Michigan-13, Missouri-1 races this year

It isn’t coincidence that Bernie Sanders performed best w/ Black voters in those states in 2016/20 primaries. Or that DSA members can win primaries in majority Black districts there. Polls showing 1 in 4 Black voters id’ing as progressive/liberal mean 1 in 3 in some places & 1 in 10 in others

Theodore R. Johnson @drtedj.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Some additional thoughts on this. 1) the ideological diversity of Black voters is known but often treated like it’s equally distributed geographically. It’s not. The Northeast, Midwest, & West are the most progressive areas of the country; there are more Black progressives there, too, naturally
