The fix: federal baseline safety standards, mandatory crisis response, clear disclosure that you're talking to AI, a private right of action, and funded FTC + FDA oversight. The UK and EU have moved. We should protect young people, minoritized populations, and people with disabilities first.

Why now? A loneliness epidemic, eroded trust in public health, and a mental health system so short-staffed that 137M people live in shortage areas. People turn to chatbots because they can't reach a human. AI is filling a gap it was never built for.

The costs are real. 16-year-old Adam Raine died by suicide after months of exchanges with a chatbot that encouraged his plans and told him to hide them from his parents. His family is now suing.

The first nationally representative survey found 13.1% of US adolescents — over 5 million — have used generative AI for mental health advice. 70% use generative AI at all; 52% use AI companions. These products were rushed out before the risks were assessed.
