Google Earth Pro will be no longer avaliable for download from June 2027 onwards. It's one of the tools that made my early work possible, so it's really sad to see it go. support.google.com/earth/thread...

What to see an article that's getting top American diabetes researchers threatened with arrest in order to suppress? It's right here:

New paper alert! First results from our seismic deployment across the Colombian Andes, where interacting subducting slabs stir up mantle flow as observed in seismic anisotropy measured with shear-wave splitting. Keep your eyes out for more exciting results to come!

@drrockdoctor.bsky.social and I just published a paper in GRL showing the power of long-operating seismic stations as a tool for studying changes in lake ice cover. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Estimating Ice Cover on the Great Lakes Using Seismic Ambient Noise
Great Lakes microseism noise (0.5–2 Hz) observed on nearby seismometers decreases linearly with increasing ice cover A linear transfer function is empirically determined and used to estimate dail...

Today, the Trump Administration and Governor Youngkin announced plans to relocate HUD into NSF's HQ building in Alexandria. NSF thrives in and because Northern Virginia is a robust science and technology hub. Our community remains the ideal location for its headquarters.

NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years. NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."

Very excited to share that another few chapters of my dissertation are now published under open access! What lurks below the deep sediments of the Indo-Burman forearc margin? doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Evolving Sediment Structure and Lithospheric Architecture Across the Indo‐Burman Forearc Margin From the Joint Inversion of Surface‐ and Scattered‐Wave Seismic Constraints
Phase velocities across the Indo-Burman forearc are markedly slow at short periods and reveal a seismic transition that reflects evolving down-dip sediment structure A shallow seismic discontinui...

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

I’m not going to retweet that NOAA propaganda post about deep sea mining. Instead, I’ll tell you that I don’t know a single NOAA scientist who would promote deep sea mining in this way, because the available science we have does not justify exploitation of deep sea habitats for minerals.

This is extraordinarily disturbing and borderline Orwellian. It must stop, or we wind up in a very, very scary place.
