The Dynamics of Agricultural Pests: leveraging data from genome to landscapes | Cambridge Global Food Security
Up to 40% of food crops are lost due to plant pests and diseases each year, causing major economic, social, and environmental impacts. Decision-makers require spatially explicit information on the spr...

Controlling #banana bunchy top #disease in Benin: Crop protection strategies with socio-economic perspectives Renata Retkute, et al. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #PlantScience
(a) Prospective spread of banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) under a hypothetical scenario with no disease management interventions. The BBTV risk (R) is defined as the proportion of simulations in which BBTV was present in a grid cell. (b) Spatial distribution of relative wealth index (RWI) (Chi et al., 2022). (c) Spatial distribution of simulated BBTV risk and RWI in the southern region. BBTV risk and RWI were each divided into three classes: low, medium and high. (d). Proportion of combined BBTV risk and RWI classes in each department. (e) Reduction in infected area due to three control strategies (decapitation, uprooting and injection) at a national scale. (f) Effect of control strategies for grid cells with high BBTV risk and low RWI.

How does a solitary insect cause riots and mass starvation? It just needs a trigger. Scientists from @camplantsci.bsky.social & @fao.org have developed new tool to help national agencies manage huge desert locust swarms before they devastate food crops in Africa & Asia 👇 tinyurl.com/327pj2cs

How do you combine simple atmospheric dispersion modelling trajectories like this with environmental data and population biology knowledge to make short- and long-term predictions of desert locust swarm migration?
