Unregulated peptides continue to pose a problem. At the end of the day, you’ve got to show clinical benefit in humans: Does it work? Adding unapproved peptides to the FDA’s list of compoundable drugs would mislead consumers into thinking they’re buying drugs backed by clinical trials.

Some who have taken hyped, unregulated peptides have regrets
As Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wants to loosen access to peptides, people who have taken the experimental substances report migraines, eye pain and fatigue.

The Committee has a clear choice: uphold the evidence-based drug approval process that has delivered life-saving therapies, or succumb to pseudoscience and grift, endangering the lives of consumers. For any agency priding itself on the protection of public health, that choice should be obvious.

FDA staff have historically chosen their advisors on panels. I told @rachelroubein.bsky.social of @washingtonpost.com that HHS selecting members of the upcoming peptides panel implies a degree of political involvement - a classic case of the Trump admin breaking a norm without breaking regulation.

In our letter, we highlight the lack of evidence supporting this change and argue that requiring just one trial could lead to approval of ineffective drugs and prevent effective drugs from coming to market if the first clinical trial did not show evidence of effectiveness, but a second study did.

RFK, Jr. added several new members to a panel that will soon review peptides, and I can't help but think that a reputable panel would find it difficult to reverse the recent FDA's recommendation that peptides not be allowed to be produced by compounding pharmacies. We'll see how this panel reacts.
